About the Role
Under direct supervision, performs construction and maintenance work in one or more specialized programs within a large public works department, incorporating standard construction and maintenance techniques to produce a finished product to required standards. Work includes assisting with the construction and rehabilitation of storm drainage infrastructure. Requires some public interaction.
Responsibilities
- Performs preventative equipment maintenance, minor maintenance, and repairs.
- Uses hand tools and operates/maintains gas/diesel/propane equipment.
- Performs traffic control at job sites, including placing cones, signs, barricades, and flagging traffic.
- Builds concrete forms, pours concrete, grades bedding material, sets steel street plates, and places asphalt.
- Performs landscape maintenance, including trimming trees, mowing grass, seeding, laying sod, and erosion control.
- Performs work in storm water management facilities, on stream bank stabilization, and erosion control projects within open waterways and wet environments.
- Performs assigned tasks during emergency situations such as floods, severe weather, and accidents.
- Prepares daily documentation such as trip logs, inventory, and material requisition forms.
- Participates in on-the-job and skill-based training, including obtaining a CDL.
- Assists with storm drain installation, repair, excavation, shoveling, and concrete work.
- Operates a Class C truck and completes required inspections.
- Assists with flagging and traffic control according to the TCP Manual.
- Helps the lead set up and maintain traffic control.
- Assists with loading, unloading, organizing, and maintaining tools and equipment.
- Works safely in trenches and assists with pipe installation and repairs.
- Participates in on-call rotation and works as needed during inclement weather.
Requirements
- Six (6) months of experience in maintenance and/or construction and/or concrete work.
- Must possess required knowledge, skills, abilities, and experience.
- Ability to learn new skills in storm water management facilities; reconstruction/rehabilitation/maintenance.
- Ability to learn safety regulations and demonstrate safety requirements.
- Ability to read, write, and follow written, oral, and computerized instructions.
- Ability to log onto a computer and complete on-line training.
- Ability to show improvement in finished quality maintenance and repairs with minimum rework.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective communication and working relationships with city employees and the public.
- Ability to learn to adapt to frequent interruptions and changes in assignments.
- Must maintain a good driving record.
- External New Hires must meet the City of Austin's Driver Record Evaluation (DRE) requisite.
- Applicants cannot have more than three moving violations or a total of six Driver Record Evaluation points within a period of thirty-six (36) months.
