About the Role

This role supports the implementation of energy and carbon accountability across the municipal government by analyzing, monitoring, and tracking energy data. The team delivers strategic, innovative approaches and initiatives that drive the City’s transition to a net-zero future, striving towards making Toronto one of the most sustainable cities in the world.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct research and analysis, providing recommendations on systematic approaches for monitoring and quantifying the greenhouse gas impact of projects, programs, by-laws, and other initiatives.
  • Develop a reporting protocol for internal and external audiences, leveraging datasets and KPIs to show progress towards the City’s climate goals.
  • Collect, maintain, and update data for use in a City-run dashboard.
  • Prepare and provide information, energy, and GHG emission trends and reports in various formats to City users and Agencies and Commissions.
  • Monitor and verify energy and cost savings from energy efficiency retrofit projects, as well as emissions impacts.
  • Liaise with other government organizations and utility companies to maintain access to relevant legislation, programs, incentives, and funding in energy management and energy efficiency programs.
  • Update and maintain resources for Divisions, Agencies, and Commissions related to Corporate climate goals.

Requirements

  • Post-secondary education in a field relevant to energy/emissions accounting, data science, or climate change mitigation policy, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Considerable experience in evaluating, manipulating, and analyzing large data sets, spreadsheets, and databases related to energy and/or emissions.
  • Experience in mathematical and statistical analysis.
  • Experience in energy conservation and demand management associated with building energy systems.
  • Experience in report development to inform on KPIs and provide recommendations.
  • High degree of initiative and interest in climate change mitigation and energy management.
  • Demonstrated background in report writing.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Skilled in planning and organizing to effectively work under time constraints as a team member or individually.
  • Understanding of utility invoicing and energy data collection (electricity, natural gas, steam, chilled water).
  • Accreditation in energy management or greenhouse gas accounting would be an asset.
  • Knowledge of energy auditing and energy modelling would be an asset.
