About the Role
As a Model Designer, you'll shape how our models work alongside people. The role focuses on designing AI interactions that extend human will and judgment, emphasizing how models read intent, act autonomously, seek input, and ultimately enhance user capabilities. You will balance advancing model capabilities with anticipating user needs and ensuring human judgment remains central to the process.
Responsibilities
- Work closely with researchers to understand, predict, and shape model behavior.
- Design how models collaborate, including when to take initiative and when to invite oversight.
- Build strong, thoughtful defaults that users can reshape.
- Partner with research, product, and design teams on interfaces for human-model interaction.
- Find creative ways to collect high-quality data, especially tacit knowledge.
- Help define evaluation metrics that capture joint accomplishments of people and models.
- Proactively identify improvements based on product sense, user feedback, and research.
- Manage multiple projects on tight timelines to enhance model collaboration.
Requirements
- Clarity in communication and ability to explain complex technical concepts in writing.
- Demonstrated ability to understand users with different needs and contexts.
- Several years of experience in a role focused on human-technology interaction (e.g., product design, UX research, content/conversation design, AI lab model behavior work).
- Past experience in designing model behavior or personality, or influencing technical roadmaps.
- Past experience in crafting research taste, model values, epistemics, or philosophies.
- Hands-on experience with large language models, including prompt iteration and output evaluation.
- A portfolio or writing samples showing exceptional taste and clarity, ideally shaping product communication.
- A track record of taking ambiguous problems from framing to shipped results, working across teams.
- Experience designing and running experiments and making data-driven decisions.
- Comfort with quantitative analysis and explaining findings to diverse audiences.
- A clear point of view on how AI should support human judgment rather than replace it.
