About the Role
Invoca is building an agentic development environment where software is designed, written, tested, deployed, and operated with AI as a first-class collaborator. This role involves shaping the future of infrastructure, leveraging partners and managed services, building self-service paths, and retiring unnecessary systems. It is not a caretaking role, but one that requires bringing an outside perspective to lead a capable team.
Responsibilities
- Decide what infrastructure systems we run in-house and what we don't, keeping systems only when they differentiate us.
- Manage the transition from self-hosted to managed Kubernetes, ensuring operational expertise is retained.
- Reduce the team's operational load to focus capacity on building rather than maintenance.
- Own the technical direction for the platform, collaborating with Developer Enablement, Infosec, and architecture.
- Lead a team of 8 SREs, setting clear expectations, providing feedback, and investing in team growth.
- Own and execute the rolling 3-month delivery plan, translating strategy into priorities and ensuring accountability for shipping work.
- Represent SRE in infrastructure decision-making and architecture/planning conversations.
- Drive a pipeline of work where infrastructure tasks become callable APIs with policy decisions, invoked by agents or people.
- Extend policy and scanning controls to ensure agent-driven infrastructure changes are safe by default.
- Define clear boundaries and contracts between infrastructure and product teams.
- Ensure the path with policy and audit is the fastest option for agents or people.
- Use AI and agentic workflows in infrastructure development and operations, including agent-assisted development and automated incident response.
- Establish safe, observable, and auditable methods for integrating AI into infrastructure, and encourage adoption.
- Build shared practices and tooling for infrastructure that all teams can adopt.
- Treat infrastructure as a product with internal users, defining and measuring adoption goals.
- Translate technical decisions into business outcomes like velocity, cost, risk, customer trust, and revenue impact.
- Partner with leadership to prioritize work based on measurable business and customer impact.
Requirements
- 5+ years hands-on experience in an SRE, DevOps, systems, or infrastructure engineering role.
- 3+ years directly managing teams in SRE, DevOps, systems, or infrastructure engineering.
- Deep knowledge across cloud infrastructure (AWS/GCP), Kubernetes, Infrastructure as Code (Terraform), policy-as-code, GitOps, continuous delivery (ArgoCD, Atlantis), observability (Prometheus, Grafana, ELK), Linux (Chef), and MySQL.
- Strong opinions on infrastructure design and automation, coupled with an open mind.
- Significant experience as a hiring manager.
- Ability to work effectively with highly skilled external specialists.
- A clear point of view on the application of AI in infrastructure work.
- Effectiveness in a remote-first, asynchronous culture.
- Ability to communicate complex technical progress to non-engineering audiences.
