About the Role

Appnovation is seeking AgentCore Platform Engineers to develop the agent-facing layer of a platform, focusing on how agents operate, retain information, collaborate, and securely access internal business systems. Your work will set the standard for other teams, emphasizing quality, clarity, and speed. This is a direct-hire position.

Responsibilities

  • Define agent structure, packaging, and execution on AgentCore Runtime, including session management, state handling, error management, and timeouts.
  • Design short-term and long-term memory patterns using AgentCore Memory and advise teams on appropriate usage.
  • Develop patterns for agent planning, tool utilization, supervisor/worker configurations, and inter-agent handoffs with defined boundaries and fallback mechanisms.
  • Expose internal REST APIs, Lambda functions, and legacy services as agent tools via AgentCore Gateway, utilizing OpenAPI specifications and Lambda targets.
  • Design and build Model Context Protocol (MCP) servers for custom integrations, including clear tool definitions and schemas.
  • Implement authentication and authorization for agents and tools (AgentCore Identity, OAuth, IAM) to enforce access controls.
  • Collaborate with system owners to securely integrate older or on-premises systems, managing rate limits, data mapping, and error scenarios.
  • Create production-quality reference agents, starter kits, and a standardized process for tool addition, versioning, and review.
  • Integrate evaluation, Bedrock Guardrails, contract testing, and safety checks to ensure predictable agent and tool behavior.
  • Conduct walkthroughs, create documentation, and provide support to teams adopting the platform.

Requirements

  • 5+ years of software engineering experience.
  • Strong proficiency in Python; TypeScript is a plus.
  • Hands-on experience building LLM agents with at least one agent framework (e.g., Strands Agents, LangGraph, LangChain, CrewAI, OpenAI Agents SDK, LlamaIndex).
  • Practical experience with LLM tool/function calling and handling model output.
  • Strong AWS fundamentals including IAM, Lambda, API Gateway, containers, DynamoDB/S3, VPC connectivity, and Secrets Manager.
  • Experience designing and consuming REST APIs and OpenAPI specifications.
  • Experience with authentication patterns such as OAuth 2.0 and OIDC.
  • Understanding of trade-offs in agent memory, retrieval (RAG), and context management.
  • Deep hands-on expertise in at least one of the two focus areas (Agent Runtime & Orchestration or Gateway, Tools & Integrations) and working knowledge of the other.
  • Ability to write clean, well-tested code that is easily readable and reusable by other engineers.
  • Clear communication skills and comfort teaching patterns to other teams.
  • Experience building agents that function reliably and understanding common failure points.
  • Focus on security and access control prior to deployment.
  • Ability to quickly learn new AWS services through hands-on building.
  • Honesty regarding current agent capabilities and limitations.
  • Effective collaboration within a client team and a desire to help other engineers succeed.
  • Prior consulting experience.
  • Prior experience and connections in the Life Sciences industry are preferred.
