About the Role
GAI Consultants is seeking an Assistant Cultural Resources Technician to support projects across the Southwestern region. This role involves identifying, excavating, and recording potential archaeological sites according to federal and state standards, including Phase I through Phase III investigations.
Responsibilities
- Follows required health and safety policies.
- Maintains client confidentiality.
- Excavates, screens, and collects archaeological materials.
- Identifies and records archaeological features and structures.
- Photographs and maps survey areas, testing locations, and cultural resources.
- Completes paper and/or electronic field forms accurately.
- Records soils using a Munsell soil chart.
- Uses a compass for basic orienteering.
- Works outdoors in varying weather conditions.
- Ability to walk 8 to 10 miles a day, sometimes in rugged terrain, while carrying tools and equipment.
- Performs other duties as assigned by supervisor.
- Primarily a field position.
- Responsible for personal task management and adherence to deadlines and scope.
Requirements
- Pre-employment drug testing is required.
- Ability to handle delicate objects, write by hand, feel sharp objects, and reach with hands/arms.
- Satisfactory close range vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus.
- Ability to talk, hear, taste or smell.
- Ability to stand, walk, climb, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl.
- Ability to lift and/or move up to 40lbs.
- Ability to hike over various types of terrain while carrying up to 25lbs of gear.
- Ability to extensively dig/shovel.
- Ability to manually clear brush/vegetation from testing locations.
- Ability to work outdoors in extreme temperatures and weather conditions.
- Shows progress acquiring basic skills.
- Follows procedures.
- Good organizational skills.
- Works with safety in mind.
- Must be flexible with work hours.
- Willingness to travel up to 100% during the weekdays and occasional weekend travel and/or work.
- Able to do physically demanding work.
- Employee responsible for obtaining their basic field kits.
- Must possess steel toed shoes.
- Responsibility for maintaining and upkeep of company issued field equipment.
- No managerial responsibilities at this level.
- Close supervision on work assignments.
- Ability to take direction from a leader.
- Possess basic oral and written communication skills.
- Interacts well with other staff.
- Ability to function positively in a team environment.
