About the Role
The Medical Assistant - NY supports the delivery of urological services, performs work as required, and functions as an effective member of the interdisciplinary team. This role performs routine administrative and clinical tasks to ensure the smooth operation of medical offices and collaborates with staff to achieve efficient patient care delivery and desired patient outcomes.
Responsibilities
- Perform various administrative and clinical duties under supervision.
- Coordinate and schedule patient appointments with physicians, nursing, and other staff.
- Greet and prepare patients for examinations.
- Measure and record vital signs.
- Record patient interview and history.
- Prepare patients for examinations and perform routine screening tests.
- Assist physicians with examinations.
- Perform phlebotomy and collect other lab specimens.
- Perform basic lab tests.
- Perform EKGs after required training.
- Perform CPR skills when necessary if BLS Certified.
- Prepare accurate, legal, and ethical documentation.
- Open and close the office in the morning and afternoon.
- Maintain patient logs for lab requests, CT scans, and other treatment orders.
- Ensure efficient back office flow, keep rooms full, and assist with room turnover.
- Perform new patient work-ups, including x-rays, vitals, and new patient packet explanation.
- Add medical history for all new patients and update established patients' history accurately.
- Perform accurate and complete room set-up for physicians.
- Update all patient medications before physician visits.
- Handle set-up for in-office surgical procedures.
- Ensure appropriate consent forms are completed correctly, minimizing medical abbreviations.
- Scribe as assigned.
- Prepare for seeing patients the following day, including patient confirmation.
- Complete patient medical record requests.
- Assist in the orientation and training of new personnel.
- Ensure proper hand-off of responsibilities upon task completion.
- Meet established attendance criteria and start work promptly.
- Be punctual and dependable for assigned shifts.
- Respect and acknowledge the organization's commitment to cultural diversity.
- Demonstrate good use of time and resources.
- Ensure all medical records are accurate and complete.
- Adhere to and support compliance and accreditation efforts, including OSHA, HIPAA, and CMS guidelines.
- Perform other position-related duties as assigned.
- Adhere to high standards of ethical conduct and comply with all applicable laws and regulations.
- Maintain patient confidentiality in compliance with HIPAA.
- Report any suspected concerns or violations to a supervisor or Compliance Department.
- Complete Annual Compliance Training.
Requirements
- Certification or Registration preferred.
- Ability to perform well in stressful situations.
- Knowledge in healthcare systems operations such as EMR and Practice Management Solutions.
- Ability to work independently and manage multiple deadlines.
- Project Management skills.
- Vendor relations skills (for those required to order office and clinical supplies).
- Database management skills.
- Strong problem-solving skills.
- Skill in using computer programs and applications including Microsoft Office.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Deliver exceptional patient service throughout all interactions.
- Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.
- Compliance with HIPAA regulations for patient confidentiality.
- High school diploma or equivalent required.
- Graduate of a Medical Assistant program or equivalent experience (based on State regulation requirements).
- 6 months experience working within a physician’s office desired.
- Urology experience desired.
- Minimal travel required.
- Ability to carry 1-25 lbs. frequently.
- Ability to occasionally carry 26-50 lbs.
- Ability to occasionally push/pull 1-25 lbs.
- Ability to occasionally push/pull over 100 lbs.
- Ability to lift 1-25 lbs. from floor to chest occasionally.
