About the Role
Providing strategic leadership for the Council’s AI Governance Framework, this role ensures AI adoption is safe, ethical, legally compliant, and aligned with corporate priorities, public-sector expectations, and ambitions. It involves designing and leading AI risk classification, governance, and approval processes, evaluating AI risks, and defining governance standards.
Responsibilities
- Design, lead, and assure proportionate AI risk classification, governance, and approval processes.
- Evaluate the risks of proposed and existing AI.
- Define and maintain governance standards, templates, controls, and guidance for delivery teams.
- Write papers, recommendations, and decisions for senior boards and forums.
- Maintain oversight of compliance, assurance outcomes, and audit findings.
- Integrate AI governance with the Council’s wider data, information, and technology governance arrangements.
- Set expectations for data ownership, stewardship, classification, lineage, retention, quality, and use.
- Embed AI governance requirements into strategic procurement, programme delivery, architecture review, service transition, and operational change.
- Maintain records.
- Align governance activities across different teams.
- Provide practical advice to enable colleagues to meet requirements and resolve issues promptly.
- Deliver targeted support to improve AI capabilities.
- Coordinate the investigation and resolution of any issues that arise.
- Monitor changes in legislation, regulation, and public-sector guidance.
- Produce strategic reports on risks, controls, compliance, benefits, assurance trends, and governance maturity for senior leaders.
Requirements
- Significant experience of leading or maturing AI, data, information, or technology governance in a complex, regulated organization.
- Ability to translate legal, regulatory, and organizational requirements into practical standards and controls.
- Working knowledge of UK GDPR and other relevant laws and regulations.
- Experience of applying data governance principles to procurement, project delivery, service transition, or operational change.
- Ability to exercise strong professional judgment in complex circumstances.
- Ability to balance innovation, risk, ethics, legal compliance, and public value.
- Ability to convert governance requirements into clear, usable processes, standards, and guidance.
- Excellent writing skills to produce clear, concise, and evidence-based advice, papers, and reports for diverse audiences.
- Interpersonal abilities to influence senior stakeholders and multi-disciplinary teams.
- Ability to resolve competing priorities and secure agreement on governance outcomes.
- Ability to coordinate assurance activities, maintain records, and drive actions to completion.
- Confidence to communicate with authority, challenge appropriately, explain complex decisions, and advise senior forums.
- Ability to analyze assurance data and emerging developments to identify trends and recommend improvements.
- Readiness to collaborate with Data Protection, Information Governance, Cyber Security, Architecture, Procurement, Legal, and Delivery teams.
