About the Role

The San Francisco District Attorney's Office is seeking to recruit, retain, and promote legal staff that reflects the diversity of the community it serves. Assistant District Attorneys assume significant responsibility early in their careers, managing a wide range of cases and gaining experience with increasingly serious and complex matters.

Responsibilities

  • Tries jury and bench criminal cases and litigates evidentiary and other hearings.
  • Represents the People of the State of California in person and in written petitions, motions, appeals, and other court documents.
  • Prepares court documents using word processing and database management.
  • Conducts investigations and writes legal briefs.
  • Prepares daily court calendar and maintains records of warrants and citations.
  • Maintains case files, including recording work product status and filing memos on case dispositions.
  • Runs law enforcement database checks on criminal backgrounds.
  • Transports relevant files and materials to court.
  • Receives and investigates complaints from the public and police department.
  • Issues citations and conducts citation hearings.
  • Researches legal issues for prosecution of criminal cases.
  • Represents the District Attorney to other agencies and community groups.
  • Performs related duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Membership in the CA State Bar Association.
  • License to practice in all state courts.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of state, federal, and municipal codes, laws, and ordinances, particularly as applied to civil and criminal laws.
  • Knowledge of legal processes and techniques of courtroom and jury trial work.
  • Knowledge of administrative techniques and methods related to the District Attorney's Office activities.
  • Ability to speak and write effectively in case preparation and presentation.
  • Ability to exercise considerable judgment and tact in dealing with court officials, juries, law enforcement agencies, and other governmental agencies.
