About the Role

You will own Luna's data architecture end-to-end, reporting to the Director of Data Science. At a startup, you will wear multiple hats and be an integral contributor to product concepts. This role starts upstream, ensuring the right data is collected, translating needs into specifications, and building the infrastructure to make data useful. The data is varied and complex, including telemetry, clinical outcomes, EDC, and manufacturing data, all with commercial and regulatory implications. This is a hands-on role requiring architectural thinking, independent execution, and satisfaction in building robust systems.

Responsibilities

  • Define data collection needs from device, manufacturing, and business operations.
  • Translate requirements into instrumentation specifications and data models.
  • Design and own data schemas for analytical, regulatory, and operational consumers.
  • Build models to accommodate business plan evolution.
  • Build and maintain transformation pipelines on Google Cloud and BigQuery.
  • Own the warehouse layer, including schema implementation, versioning, access controls, and data quality monitoring.
  • Ensure lineage and transformation logic are traceable for regulatory audit.
  • Build and maintain integrations with clinical data sources, including EDC systems.
  • Produce CDISC-compliant datasets (SDTM/ADaM) for regulatory submissions.
  • Build data infrastructure for manufacturing, including lot tracking and process control.
  • Determine and capture necessary process data with manufacturing and quality teams.
  • Define data quality metrics, build checks, and resolve issues.
  • Perform analysis as needed by the team.
  • Build internal tooling and documentation to make data accessible and trustworthy.

Requirements

  • 7+ years of data engineering experience with a track record of owning and delivering production data systems end-to-end.
  • Experience understanding user needs, defining data models, and establishing instrumentation requirements upstream of pipeline development.
  • Strong proficiency in Python and SQL.
  • Working knowledge of cloud data platforms (Google Cloud, BigQuery, Firestore).
  • Strong data modeling skills and judgment to serve multiple consumers.
  • Experience working across teams (data science, engineering, operations, clinical, regulatory) to translate requirements into specifications.
  • Clear, direct communication with non-technical stakeholders.
  • Must live within a reasonable commuting distance to San Diego.
  • Must be authorized to work for any employer in the U.S.
