About the Role

Dedalus builds persistent computers for AI agents, providing an environment for agents to run software, maintain state, and operate over time. This role focuses on improving system performance and efficiency, directly impacting the company's speed and ability to meet commitments. The engineer will have significant autonomy to investigate, experiment, and implement solutions, working closely with the CTO and engineering team.

Responsibilities

  • Make the development loop faster by profiling builds, tests, CI queues, artifact transfers, and local workflows.
  • Identify and address repeated work, unnecessary dependencies, poor scheduling, and cache misses.
  • Investigate bottlenecks across compilers, linkers, filesystems, networks, or upstream dependencies.
  • Establish performance baselines, implement changes, and verify results.
  • Use and improve open-source tooling like Bessemer (BSMR) and Hollywood.
  • Design and build platforms for other engineers, including APIs, controllers, CLIs, and services.
  • Consider resource lifecycles, concurrency, cancellation, permissions, and failure reporting in platform design.
  • Improve CI/CD, GitOps, environment provisioning, staging, production rollout, and recovery processes.
  • Enhance the traceability of releases and the diagnosis of failures through instrumentation.
  • Develop and manage the in-office homelab for testing and debugging on real machines and networks.

Requirements

  • Strong software engineering skills and experience building or operating infrastructure.
  • Ability to maintain attention on a problem when initial explanations are incorrect.
  • Proactive investigation of slowness and repeated effort outside immediate assignments.
  • Enjoyment of performance optimization, including challenging aspects.
  • Detail-oriented with a focus on API names, error messages, correctness, and performance.
  • Ability to make decisions, complete tasks, and ship improvements.
  • Respect for the craft of software engineering and openness to better practices.
  • Proficiency in using modern AI coding tools.
  • Ability to work well with ambiguity and turn incomplete goals into concrete problems.
  • Enjoyment of freedom to tinker and turn experiments into dependable systems.
  • Experience with Go, Rust, C++, or another systems language.
  • Practical Linux debugging skills.
  • Thoughtful API design experience.
  • Experience with TypeScript in tooling.
  • Experience with build systems, CI/CD, GitOps, Kubernetes, observability, and infrastructure as code.
  • Familiarity with Terraform is useful.
  • Experience operating systems after building them.
  • Hardware and networking expertise is a plus.
  • Knowledge of Ethernet, routing, VLANs, SFP+/QSFP optics and direct-attach cables, RDMA, and RoCE is useful.
