About the Role

The Globe and Mail is hiring for 11 contract editorial positions across the newsroom for its 2027 Summer Jobs Program. These positions are for early-career journalists looking to advance their careers. Summer staff cover for full-time journalists during the busy summer vacation period, which spans 13 weeks from early June through Labour Day, 2027. Some successful candidates may be considered for an additional 12-month contract extension.

Responsibilities

  • Pitch ideas, cover stories, and produce features for news, Report on Business, and other sections.
  • Work with reporters on structural edits of stories, ensuring accuracy, clarity, and readability.
  • Write headlines, manage homepages, send news alerts, copy edit stories, and make curation decisions based on news judgment and audience data.
  • Engage in a wide range of visual journalism, including photos, video, graphics, and design, collaborating across all aspects of coverage.
  • Collaborate across the newsroom to find and tell stories through data gathering, analysis, and the creation of charts and visualizations.

Requirements

  • Must have previous journalism experience (freelance writing/editing, school publication work, or personal ventures like newsletters/podcasts).
  • Recent postsecondary graduates and graduating postsecondary students are welcome.
  • Experience gained without formal journalism programs or traditional media companies is valued.
  • Must be legally eligible to work in Canada through to September, 2027.
