About the Role
Promise Academy I High School, part of Harlem Children’s Zone, is seeking a High School Counselor to break the cycle of intergenerational poverty and unlock new possibilities for students. This role is crucial in delivering exceptional education and holistic support, empowering young minds, and driving transformative change.
Responsibilities
- Conduct evaluation sessions with students using various methods to assess and advise them, their guardians, parents, and teachers.
- Counsel individuals to help them overcome personal, social, and behavioral issues impacting their educational and personal well-being.
- Provide crisis intervention for students facing difficult situations.
- Assist students in preparing for their transition to the next grade level.
- Consult with and serve as a resource for students, guardians, parents, and teachers regarding student developmental needs and resource requirements.
- Collaborate with school staff and administrators to ensure students are academically on grade level.
- Facilitate the integration of the guidance curriculum into the educational curricula.
- Complete written reports as requested by the Principal.
- Maintain accurate and complete student records in compliance with laws and policies.
- Participate in the evaluation and revision of the school guidance program.
- Attend meetings, conferences, and trainings to stay updated on best practices.
- Identify cases of domestic abuse or family problems and encourage students/parents to seek assistance.
- Provide services to teach students conflict resolution skills.
- Conduct follow-up interviews with counselors to ensure student needs are met.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Requirements
- A valid NYS School Counseling Certification is required.
- Dedication and commitment to the mission of HCZ Promise Academy.
- Strong organizational and communication skills, both verbal and written.
- Ability to work effectively with parents, students, faculty, support staff, external representatives, and community groups.
- Understanding of different student maturity levels.
- Ability to help students gain self-awareness regarding interests and abilities to manage behavior and thinking.
- Understanding of test construction and ability to interpret educational test data.
- Knowledge of grade test targets.
- Ability to evaluate student transcripts.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills.
- Ability to plan, organize, and implement meetings with diverse participants.
