Responsibilities

  • Answer main hospital telephones, patient information lines, and emergency lines.
  • Respond to caller inquiries accurately according to hospital policy, referring calls using a PC-based directory and paging system.
  • Activate paging and/or Emergency Codes per departmental and hospital policies.
  • Page physicians and key hospital personnel promptly as per hospital policy.
  • Update On-Call Schedules for locating hospital staff.
  • Stay current on hospital activities and relevant policies and procedures.
  • Act as a role model and champion, integrating safe, best practices into daily activities to foster safe and exemplary care.

Requirements

  • Must reside and be legally eligible to work in Ontario.
  • High School Diploma.
  • 2-3 years of previous experience as a telephone or call centre operator is preferable.
  • Hospital experience is a definite asset.
  • Ability to work at a fast pace in an unpredictable environment.
  • Ability to remain calm and polite when faced with stressful situations and potentially challenging callers.
  • Professional behavior and communication that meets the standards of the professional regulatory college or association, as applicable, and the standards of Women’s College Hospital.
  • Plays a critical role in acting as an advocate for safety and will demonstrate principles, practices and processes that will optimize a safe environment for all.
  • Employment is conditional upon verification of credentials, completion of a health review, and proof of immunity and vaccination status for vaccine-preventable diseases.
  • Successful candidates will be required to complete the Employee, Physician and Volunteer Immunization Record Submission Form and the Pre-Placement Health Review Form prior to commencing employment.

Skills

  • Excellent customer service skills.
  • Excellent verbal telephone skills and a firm grasp of the English language.
  • Good working knowledge of Microsoft Windows, Word and Outlook.
  • Knowledge of Nortel Meridian telephones is an asset.
  • Keyboarding at 40 w.p.m. with a maximum 5% error rate.
  • Excellent problem-solving and clear communication skills.
