About the Role

This role involves operating and maintaining wastewater treatment facilities to ensure efficient, compliant, and safe operations. The position offers a path to full-time permanent employment after obtaining the necessary Class 4 WWT Certification.

Responsibilities

  • Adjusts, inspects, and evaluates processes and equipment to optimize performance, maintain regulatory compliance, and minimize adverse impacts.
  • Operates and monitors plant process equipment and related appurtenances.
  • Makes process adjustments, operational decisions, and responds to alarms and emergencies.
  • Maintains records and documentation of process and work area activities.
  • Collects samples, performs routine tests and analysis, and records results.
  • Identifies operational changes, interprets information, and implements corrective actions or troubleshoots process issues.
  • Utilizes various technical systems for data management and validation.
  • Ensures safe work practices, including potential use of breathing apparatus, confined space entry, and lockout/tagging.
  • Isolates, locks out, and prepares systems and equipment for maintenance.
  • Performs preventative maintenance diagnostics and routine duties.
  • Monitors and assesses equipment performance and maintains process operations using CLAIR principles.
  • Performs minor electrical, instrumentation, and mechanical repairs.
  • Ensures cleanliness and safety of facilities by maintaining a clean and organized work area.
  • Initiates material purchase orders, issues material documents, receives materials, maintains inventories, and follows up on maintenance quality.
  • Initiates the call-in of plant staff for shift coverage, operational issues, and emergencies.
  • Provides work direction and training to other staff.
  • Responds and interacts with staff, the public, and regulators related to plant operations.
  • Performs all work assignments safely in accordance with the Occupational Health and Safety Act and other applicable regulations.
  • Works shifts as per assigned work area, shift assignment, and work schedule.
  • Performs work in a safe, efficient, and courteous manner.
  • Performs related work as assigned.

Requirements

  • Must have a Grade 12 diploma or equivalent as recognized by the Ontario Ministry of Environment (MOE).
  • Must possess and maintain a valid Class IV Wastewater Treatment Operator's Certificate (obtained by written exam) issued under Ontario Regulation 129/04.
  • Alternatively, a minimum 2-year diploma/degree/certificate from a recognized Canadian college or university in environmental science, biology, chemistry, or equivalent, and the ability to obtain Class IV Wastewater Treatment Operator's Certificate.
  • If employed without certification, must pass the Class 1 certification exam within 90 days and progress through subsequent levels according to a defined schedule.
  • Familiarity with environmental regulations applicable to wastewater treatment facilities.
  • Knowledge of principles and practices for operating and maintaining advanced wastewater treatment plants, including specific processes like Activated Sludge, Anaerobic Digestion, Dewatering, Incineration, Disinfection, and Nutrient Removal.
  • Ability to work with process control automation systems and interpret process information.
  • Ability to alter unit process operations manually or using computerized technology.
  • Knowledge of record keeping, sampling techniques, and analytical procedures, including the ability to interpret and make process adjustments.
  • General knowledge of basic mechanical/electrical theory and instrumentation.
  • Knowledge of occupational hazards and standard safety precautions in a wastewater treatment plant environment.
  • Basic computer skills including word processing, email, and spreadsheet software.
  • Ability to provide good customer service and communicate courteously with the public.
  • Ability to effectively communicate both orally and in writing.
  • Ability to prepare reports and maintain neat and accurate records.
  • Demonstrated strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to work well in a team.
  • Demonstrated interest in continuous learning.
  • Must possess and maintain a valid Province of Ontario, Class “G” Driver’s License.
  • Must have or obtain required City permit for assigned vehicle(s) and equipment(s).
  • Familiarity with requirements of the Occupational Health and Safety Act and its regulations.
  • Will be required to do shift work in accordance with Collective Agreement.
  • Ability to orient new staff on assigned vehicles/equipment.
  • Ability to use or learn to use various technical devices related to the position.
  • Must be physically capable of performing required duties.

Salary/Compensations

  • $35.62 - $44.54 per hour
