About the Role

Texas Oncology is seeking a Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT) to support the new Lakeway location. This full-time position offers a Monday-Friday schedule with no weekends or holidays. The role involves performing specimen analysis, instrument maintenance, and quality control procedures for moderate and high complexity tests, while adhering to safety and compliance policies.

Responsibilities

  • Perform phlebotomy and collect appropriate specimens from patients.
  • Assure pre-authorization and complete consent forms for limited coverage tests.
  • Assist with special procedures as needed, such as bone marrows.
  • Follow laboratory procedures for specimen handling, processing, testing, reporting, and record maintenance.
  • Send specimens to reference laboratories for tests not performed in-house.
  • Process incoming orders for lab testing, including reference laboratory specimens.
  • Perform specimen analysis for Chemistry, Hematology, and Immunology.
  • Maintain and operate all laboratory equipment, performing daily, weekly, and monthly maintenance.
  • Adhere to quality control policies and document all QC activities, calibrations, and maintenance.
  • Record proper lot numbers of controls, calibrators, and reagents.
  • Participate in proficiency testing by performing sample analysis and reporting results annually.
  • Prepare peripheral blood smears and perform complete WBC differentials.
  • Perform microscopic examination of urinary sediment.
  • Record results on worksheets and computer systems, performing file maintenance.
  • Process specimens for send-out testing.
  • Follow policies when test systems are outside acceptable performance levels.
  • Identify and correct problems that may affect test performance or reporting, or notify a supervisor.
  • Document all corrective actions taken when test systems deviate from performance specifications.
  • Maintain proper documentation as per the quality assurance program, including logs and records.
  • Verify all critical results and document with accurate follow-up.
  • Maintain adequate supply inventory and ensure supplies are viable before use.
  • Prepare reagents, stains, and other chemical solutions.
  • Restock the laboratory area as needed.
  • Process in-house and incoming results for charting.
  • Chart patient results in a timely manner.
  • Properly identify and band patients for blood product transfusion.
  • Process properly labeled specimens according to local blood bank policy.
  • Adhere to all OSHA compliance laws and Universal Precaution procedures.
  • Comply with applicable regulatory agency standards.
  • Properly dispose of hazardous materials.
  • Maintain a clean working environment.
  • Maintain confidentiality of all patient and medical staff information.
  • Perform CLIA classified Waived and Moderately complexity testing.
  • May work under the supervision of a Medical Technologist (MT)/Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS).

Requirements

  • Associates degree in medical technology, laboratory science, or related science field.
  • Current state license if required.
  • AMT, ASCP, or equivalent certification preferred but not required.
  • Entry-level position requires no experience for Level 1.
  • Three years of experience required for Level 2.
  • Five years of experience required for Level Sr.
  • Phlebotomy experience strongly preferred.
  • Full range of body motion including manual and finger dexterity and eye-hand coordination.
  • Ability to sit/stand for extensive periods.
  • Ability to use hands to finger, handle, or feel and arms to reach or carry.
  • Ability to occasionally lift and carry items weighing up to 40 lbs.
  • Corrected vision, color perception, and hearing to normal range.
  • Legible handwriting.
  • Significant interaction with management, staff, and external auditors and clients.
  • Frequent travel by air or automobile, approximately 70% of workweek, on average.
