About the Role

The Children’s Programmer plays an important role in the delivery of NYWS' child and youth programs, facilitating age-appropriate educational and recreational programs to support positive social and emotional development using trauma-informed practice.

Responsibilities

  • Foster and maintain a trauma-informed, respectful, and inclusive environment.
  • Facilitate age-appropriate activities and programs for children and youth.
  • Foster diversity, equity, and inclusion in program delivery and communication.
  • Facilitate programming using various methods like storytelling, creative arts, and play.
  • Adapt facilitation to accommodate diverse needs, interests, and abilities.
  • Actively participate in activities with children and youth, modeling positive social skills.
  • Provide direct support to children and youth, fostering safety, trust, and well-being.
  • Provide individualized attention and care, responding to developmental milestones and challenges.
  • Address inappropriate behavior respectfully to facilitate reflection and growth.
  • Recognize and de-escalate challenging situations in a trauma-informed manner.
  • Notify leadership of needed supplies or equipment.
  • Prepare program spaces and materials before activities and ensure cleanliness afterward.
  • Follow safety and security protocols and report concerns.
  • Maintain accurate program documentation, including incident reports and performance metrics.
  • Demonstrate professional conduct aligning with NYWS's values.
  • Collaborate with the team to support children and youth needing additional assistance.
  • Provide child-minding support during groups and meetings.
  • Uphold client and staff confidentiality.
  • Attend team building, training, and community outreach projects.
  • Support NYWS in harm reduction policy development and community advocacy.
  • Collaborate with staff to ensure continuity of care and consistent support.
  • Maintain flexibility and availability for relief shifts.
  • Proactively uphold principles of trauma-informed practice.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Completed or currently enrolled in the last year of post-secondary education in Early Childhood Education Child Development and/or hold a Bachelor’s Degree in Psychology, Child Development, Education, and Family and Social Services.
  • Experience and/or training in designing and implementing programs and activities for children and youth.
  • 2-3 years of experience working in summer camps, after-school programs, recreational programs, or similar child and youth-focused environments.
  • Experience and/or training in trauma-informed care or mental health.
  • Demonstrated strong understanding of child and youth development, trauma-informed care, and culturally responsive practices.
  • Possess or willingness to provide a satisfactory Vulnerable Sector Check (PVSC).
  • Completed CPR Level C and First Aid certifications.
  • Experience working with survivors of violence and their dependents (asset).
  • Fluency in speaking and/or writing in additional languages (asset).
