About the Role

Responsibilities

  • Provide residents with routine daily nursing care and services in accordance with the resident’s assessment and care plan.
  • Assist the Director of Nursing in planning, developing, organizing, implementing, and evaluating the day-to-day functions of the nursing services department.
  • Assist in developing and implementing a nursing services organizational structure.
  • Work with the MDS/RAI Coordinator to schedule, conduct, and submit resident assessments.
  • Allocate resources efficiently to ensure residents achieve their highest practical physical, mental, and psychosocial well-being.
  • Collaborate with medical professionals, consultants, and organizations.
  • Coordinate with other resident services to ensure continuity of resident care.
  • Interpret long-term care regulations and requirements of participation.
  • Assist in developing nursing policies and procedures that meet current standards, comply with regulations, and support operational objectives.
  • Assist the Director of Nursing in obtaining staffing information for daily posting.
  • Participate in developing and updating the resident’s written discharge plan.
  • Develop and update nursing services objectives and statements of philosophy.
  • Ensure reference materials at nurses’ stations are current.
  • Recommend necessary reference materials to the Director of Nursing.
  • Monitor Quality Measure Reports.
  • Participate in facility surveys as requested.
  • Participate in the development, maintenance, and implementation of the facility’s QAPI program for the nursing services department.
  • Conduct administrative duties such as completing medical forms, reports, and charting.
  • Serve on, participate in, and attend various facility committees in the absence of the Director of Nursing.
  • Participate in regularly scheduled reviews of discharge plans.
  • Schedule, attend, and participate in Care Plan Committee meetings.
  • Serve on the QAPI Committee as directed.
  • Ensure direct nursing care is provided by qualified personnel.
  • Greet newly admitted residents and escort them to their rooms.
  • Make rounds with physicians as necessary.
  • Monitor medication passes and treatment schedules.
  • Participate in the interviewing and selection of residents for admission.
  • Provide direct nursing care as necessary.
  • Provide the Director of Nursing with information regarding resident needs and department capabilities.
  • Report medication errors and problem areas to the Director of Nursing.
  • Assist in developing and implementing corrective actions.
  • Schedule daily rounds to observe residents and ensure needs are met.
  • Ensure staff members provide care reflecting resident wishes.
  • Participate in resident assessments and the development of person-centered care plans.
  • Encourage resident and family participation in care plan development and review.
  • Assist the Staff Development Coordinator in planning and conducting in-service training.
  • Attend continuing education programs.
  • Provide leadership training for Charge Nurses/Nurse Supervisors.
  • Ensure nursing services personnel follow established policies, procedures, and dress codes.
  • Ensure personnel use safety equipment when moving or lifting residents.
  • Maintain resident care rooms, treatment areas, etc., in a clean, safe, and sanitary manner.
  • Ensure adequate supplies of PPE are available.
  • Ensure personnel follow infection prevention and control procedures.
  • Participate in developing procedures for reporting hazardous conditions or equipment.
  • Participate in developing and implementing the infection prevention and control program.
  • Report missing/illegible labels and SDSs to the Safety Compliance Officer.
  • Assist the Director of Maintenance in developing a preventive maintenance program for department equipment and supplies.
  • Ensure appropriate SDSs are on file for hazardous chemicals.
  • Ensure only trained personnel operate facility equipment.
  • Participate in developing and implementing procedures for the safe operation of all nursing services equipment.
  • Recommend equipment and supply needs to the Director of Nursing.

Requirements

  • Two (2) years of experience as a supervisor in a nursing care facility or other related health care facility.
  • Six (6) months of experience in rehabilitative and restorative nursing practices.
  • Demonstrate knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age-related needs of the residents served.
  • Be a supportive team member and contribute to the team concept.
  • Ability to make independent decisions when circumstances warrant.
  • Ability to deal tactfully with personnel, residents, family members, visitors, government agencies, and the general public.
  • Knowledgeable of nursing and medical practices, procedures, laws, regulations, and guidelines pertaining to nursing care facilities.
  • Possess leadership and supervisory ability and willingness to work harmoniously with and supervise other personnel.
  • Ability to plan, organize, develop, implement, and interpret programs, goals, objectives, policies, and procedures necessary for quality care.
  • Patience, tact, a cheerful disposition, and enthusiasm.
  • Willingness to handle difficult residents.
  • Willingness to seek out new methods and principles and incorporate them into existing nursing practices.
  • Ability to work independently and have flexibility, personal integrity, and the ability to work effectively with residents, personnel, and support agencies.
  • Not pose a direct threat to the health or safety of other individuals in the workplace.
