About the Role

Ontario County seeks a qualified, motivated attorney to act as legal counsel to the Board of Supervisors, the County Administrator, and the County’s departments and officers. The County Attorney’s Office provides counsel for defense of civil actions against Ontario County, juvenile delinquency prosecution, counsel for the County’s Department of Social Services, contract review, risk management, and various other areas of municipal law.

Responsibilities

  • Act as legal counsel to the Board of Supervisors, the County Administrator, and the County’s departments and officers.
  • Provide counsel for defense of civil actions against Ontario County.
  • Prosecute juvenile delinquency cases.
  • Provide counsel for the County’s Department of Social Services, including family court and Medicare fraud.
  • Review and approve contracts.
  • Engage in risk management.
  • Provide counsel on legal matters at Finger Lakes Community College.
  • Handle labor relations.
  • Develop and implement policy.
  • Handle various other areas of municipal law.

Requirements

  • A Juris Doctorate degree from an accredited law school.
  • Admission to practice law in NYS is required at time of appointment.
  • 0 to 5 years’ experience in the areas mentioned below.
  • Unlicensed law degree graduate awaiting bar exam/bar results for admission may be hired at lower salary band and will move to the Associate Level salary band once they have successfully passed the bar.

Salary/Compensations

  • 2026 – New Associate Level Attorney starting rate of pay (Step 1) is $102,779/yr.
  • 2026 – Experienced Level Attorney starting rate of pay (Step 1) is $121,299/yr.
  • Adjustments up to Step 4 maybe made based upon experience and with the approval of the Ontario County Board of Supervisors.
