About the Role
We are hiring our first dedicated Database Performance Engineer to own performance and scale for our .NET and SQL Server on Azure platform. You will make fast paths faster, ensure they remain fast as volume grows, and provide engineers with the tooling and judgment to write performant data access. This is a hands-on, senior individual contributor role within a small, agile team of DBAs and site reliability engineers.
Responsibilities
- Own query and index performance across our transactional SQL Server estate using data-driven measures.
- Investigate and implement horizontal scaling techniques to support a growing customer base.
- Identify and remove bottlenecks on latency-critical paths, managing them to an agreed p99 budget.
- Own high availability and disaster recovery, including testing against real RTO and RPO targets.
- Build and enhance self-serve tooling for development teams to identify query plan regressions and debug performance.
- Automate manual processes using PowerShell, Python, or Terraform, treating database configuration as code.
- Manage SQL Server cost as a first-class metric alongside latency and uptime.
- Collaborate with Product Engineering and data analytics teams to review designs and improve data access practices.
- Evangelize advanced database technologies to software engineering teams, demonstrating their application.
Requirements
- Experience working with ORMs, particularly Entity Framework, and understanding their performance tradeoffs.
- Substantial experience running Microsoft SQL Server in production at scale in a business where downtime and latency have direct commercial impact.
- Deep understanding of SQL Server internals, including the query optimizer, plan cache, indexing, statistics, locking, blocking, isolation levels, tempdb, and wait types.
- A track record of specific, measurable performance wins.
- Experience scaling relational data beyond tuning, utilizing techniques like partitioning, archival, denormalization, caching, read replicas, or migration to different stores.
- Comfortable writing application code, not just scripts, with expert-level T-SQL, PowerShell or Python, and infrastructure as code.
- Hands-on experience with HA/DR design and leading production incidents.
- Working knowledge of other database engines such as PostgreSQL, with an understanding of their pros and cons.
- Ability to translate technical concepts and tradeoffs to non-database specialists.
