About the Role

The New York Times is seeking an Engineering Manager to lead the Privacy & Governance Services team within the Data Platform mission. This team develops and maintains technical solutions for privacy law compliance, data quality ownership, and data discovery. The role reports to the Senior Engineering Manager of Data Platform.

Responsibilities

  • Lead a team of engineers, promoting a culture of collaboration, innovation, and continuous improvement.
  • Coach engineers, helping them make an impact while growing in their careers.
  • Experience building a practice of automation for operational needs including running processes, SLAs, and escalation paths.
  • Oversee the execution of roadmap items and increase productivity and delivery.
  • Collaborate with product managers and partners to define product requirements and roadmaps.
  • Guide technical decisions and architectural design for the team's projects.
  • Monitor and report on initiative progress and risks.
  • Develop and maintain budgets, forecasts, and a cost attribution model for your team's cloud solutions.
  • Demonstrate support and understanding of our value of journalistic independence and a strong commitment to our mission to seek the truth and help people understand the world.

Requirements

  • 1+ years of experience as an engineering manager
  • 4+ years of experience in a technical leadership role working with cross-functional partners
  • 5+ years of experience in full-stack software engineering designing and developing scalable, high-performance systems that handle large volumes of traffic
  • Strong technical fluency and experience guiding architecture discussions
  • Experience developing a high-performing team and growing engineering competencies over time
  • Experience fostering a culture of high trust and productivity within the immediate team and cross-functionally
  • Understanding of Privacy regulations and solutions for managing and respecting user consent and DSRs
  • Experience working with legal, compliance, and security teams to align privacy needs for product delivery
  • Understanding of modern data platforms, including data management principles and governance solutions such as data cataloging, lineage tracking and data contracts.
