About the Role

Austin Housing Authority (AHA) is seeking an Applications & Systems Engineer to build internal web tools, optimize databases, and lead AI-assisted development. This role involves acting as an internal consultant to identify and solve operational bottlenecks with automated technical solutions.

Responsibilities

  • Develop, maintain, and optimize internal web applications and services by integrating AI models.
  • Construct and support APIs and middleware for AI components, databases, and applications.
  • Create and manage SQL-based reports, dashboards, and data queries.
  • Ensure data integrity and security across applications and operational systems.
  • Leverage AI productivity tools to accelerate software development and automate tasks.
  • Administer and improve digital workflows to streamline operations.
  • Collaborate with department heads and vendors to translate business needs into technical solutions.
  • Provide high-level troubleshooting for production systems.
  • Serve as an internal consultant to identify bottlenecks and recommend technology improvements.
  • Maintain version control (Git) and support cloud or server-based environments.
  • Establish protocols for the safe and ethical use of AI tools.
  • Maintain documentation explaining system logic and architectural decisions.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in a technology-related field or equivalent professional experience.
  • 1–3 years of experience in data analysis, application development, or systems administration.
  • Alternative: Degree/Certification from a licensed business/technical college with 1–2 years of experience in SQL databases.
  • Advanced degree (Master's) and 1–5 years of related professional experience (preferred).
  • Bachelor's degree and 2-5 years of related professional experience (preferred).
  • 3–5 years of experience working with SQL databases (preferred).
  • Experience integrating third-party systems via REST/JSON (preferred).
  • Must pass a Criminal Background Check, sex offender registry check, Driving Record check, and Physical/Drug Screening upon offer of employment.
