About the Role
Shape the hardware identity of humanoids, defining their look and feel from proportions to surfaces. You will integrate complex systems, design for passive safety, and create physical human-machine interactions. This role extends the design language to the robot's ecosystem, including charging docks and packaging. You will build physical models, perform surfacing, and hand over CAD for engineering. Material selection, supplier collaboration, and feasibility studies are key responsibilities.
Responsibilities
- Define the hardware identity of humanoids, including proportions, surfaces, and overall silhouette.
- Ensure passive safety by designing clearances, pinch points, contact surfaces, and fall behavior.
- Integrate internal components such as sensors, cameras, cooling, connectors, and cable routing.
- Design physical human-machine interactions, including status signals and touchpoints.
- Extend the design language to the robot's ecosystem (charging docks, transport cases, etc.).
- Build physical models, perform surfacing, and create handover-ready CAD.
- Select materials and finishes, review samples, and collaborate with suppliers on feasibility, cost, and lead times.
- Explore non-standard materials and engage specialized external labs.
Requirements
- A degree in industrial or product design, or an engineering degree with a strong design focus.
- Approximately five or more years of experience designing physical products in-house or at a studio.
- Experience in robotics, medical devices, lab/industrial equipment, mobility, or similar fields.
- Experience designing products built in small series (hundreds rather than millions).
- Prior experience designing under mechanical safety requirements, including guarding and contact safety.
- Proficiency in surface modeling using Rhino, Onshape, SolidWorks, or Fusion.
- Experience with 3D printing and workshop practices for model building.
- Ability to read mechanical drawings and engage in technical discussions with engineers.
- Fluent English language skills.
