About the Role

The Victim Services Officer is responsible for delivering the Provincial Victim Services Program, supporting survivors and families of human trafficking and sexual exploitation in accordance with relevant legislation.

Responsibilities

  • Maintain an effective communication network with Justice, community, and government officials.
  • Coordinate services for victims of crime within the criminal justice system and the community.
  • Monitor and recommend intervention strategies to address identified gaps in service.
  • Support victims in accessing justice and provide referrals to culturally appropriate resources.
  • Ensure the confidentiality of client information and maintain a caseload of sensitive files.
  • Provide support to meet client needs and refer to specialists as needed.
  • Accurately enter client service information into the Victim Services case management system.
  • Assess risk and communicate information in accordance with the High-Risk Domestic Violence Case Coordination Protocol.
  • Collaborate with other government and community organizations for outreach, navigation, and support.
  • Work with other organizations to provide culturally specific supports and services.
  • Collaborate with African Nova Scotian and Indigenous communities to understand complexities of sexual violence.
  • Maintain knowledge of all relevant legislation, policies, and procedures.
  • Promote diversity through ongoing education, communication, and support.
  • Participate in human trafficking and sexual exploitation initiatives, committees, training, and outreach.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree (typically in the Social Sciences) and three years' related experience, or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
  • Experience in client assessment and interviewing techniques.
  • Experience in case management and computer skills.
  • Knowledge of the criminal justice system and community resources.
  • Knowledge of the Victims’ Rights and Services Act, the Criminal Code of Canada, and the Canadian Victims Bill of Rights.
  • Understanding of the complexities of human trafficking and sexual exploitation and their traumatic impacts.
  • Experience working with individuals who have been human trafficked/sexually exploited and with vulnerable populations.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Good organizational ability.
  • Strong interpersonal skills, including the ability to work as part of a team.
  • Demonstrated empathy, warmth, and tact.
  • In-depth understanding of human dynamics and the effects of victimization.
  • Sound judgment and the ability to work with self-confidence and decisiveness.
  • A high level of judgment, independent decision-making, and discretion.
  • Access to reliable transportation is required.
  • Ability to speak French is an asset.
