About the Role
As an Employee Relations Specialist, you will make a significant contribution to Westminster's success by providing expert guidance on employee relations matters, including disciplinary, grievance, performance, and wellbeing. You will help managers navigate complex issues, ensure legally compliant outcomes, and offer advice on employment legislation, HR, and best practices. This role involves leading projects, preparing for Employment Tribunals, interpreting policies, and developing HR policies and employment practices.
Responsibilities
- Provide expert guidance on employee relations including disciplinary, grievance, performance and wellbeing matters.
- Help managers navigate a range of challenging issues.
- Ensure fair, consistent and legally compliant outcomes.
- Offer carefully considered guidance on employment legislation, HR and best practice.
- Lead, deliver and contribute to a range of projects.
- Work with legal to prepare responses and witness statements for Employment Tribunals.
- Interpret policies and procedures for line managers.
- Help managers meet their legal, procedural and development requirements.
- Devise and implement tailored solutions to a range of complex subjects.
- Lead on the development and review of HR policies and employment practices.
- Work with managers and the HR team to ensure operational issues are identified.
- Provide updates and information relating to the development of the latest HR strategies and initiatives.
- Make recommended changes to HR policies and employment practices.
- Keep up to date with the latest developments in employment legislation, EC directives, codes of practice and related matters.
- Maintain knowledge of HR policies and procedures, employment law and relevant case law.
- Ensure the council complies with its statutory responsibilities.
- Support and promote the equality and diversity agenda.
Requirements
- Well-developed experience of working in the HR function of a unionised local authority or other multi-service organisation.
- Experience advising on issues such as discipline, grievance, sick absence, performance management and redundancy.
- In-depth knowledge of employment law and HR best practice.
- Proactive approach to responsibilities.
- Capable of working to deadlines and targets.
- Ability to focus on a large number of cases and projects simultaneously.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to develop positive working relationships with managers and trade union representatives at all levels.
