About the Role
This role involves the inspection, maintenance, installation, and repair of water meters and related equipment. You will troubleshoot customer issues, ensure compliance with city standards, and utilize technology for reporting and record-keeping.
Responsibilities
- Inspect, maintain, install, remove, replace, repair, rebuild, service, diagnose, troubleshoot, and test water meters up to one inch in diameter, including seasonal meters and related connections/valves.
- Inspect, maintain, install, remove, replace, repair, service, program, diagnose, and troubleshoot all water MTUs.
- Activate and winterize seasonal water services and meters.
- Investigate, troubleshoot, and assist customers with water meter-related issues, including high bills and complaints.
- Locate and operate city water service valves, building control valves, meter inlet, outlet, and by-pass valves.
- Inspect water meters and related equipment, including piping and bypass valves, ensuring compliance with by-laws.
- Respond to planned and emergency customer service requests related to water meter issues and other water distribution systems.
- Utilize technology (laptops, handheld devices) for accurate reporting of work, investigations, and troubleshooting.
- Use electronic work and asset management systems to record work performed and access billing system information.
- Organize and prioritize work to ensure timely completion of critical tasks.
- Liaise with customers, property owners, and managers to schedule work and shutdowns.
- Respond to customer inquiries, concerns, and complaints professionally.
- Operate hand and power tools and equipment for water meter and water distribution system operations.
- Read and interpret field and utility drawings, ensuring work complies with city standards and by-laws.
- Perform work in a clean and safe manner, adhering to the Ontario Health and Safety Act (OHSA) and city safe work practices.
- Erect barricades and traffic control signs to prepare job sites.
- Provide training and work direction to new staff and oversee contractor work for compliance.
- Perform confined space entry work, including using pumps for dewatering and entering water meter chambers.
- Travel to various work locations and maintain an inventory of materials, tools, and equipment in the assigned vehicle.
Requirements
- Must possess or be able to obtain a provincial Water Meter Installer Certificate.
- Must possess or be able to obtain and maintain a valid Confined Space Entry Certificate with First Aid and CPR training.
- Must have a Secondary School Diploma or equivalent experience.
- Must possess and maintain a valid Province of Ontario Class “G” driver’s license and qualify for the City’s driver’s permit.
- Considerable experience in the operation, maintenance, and installation of water meters, water distribution services, and related tools/equipment.
- Ability to read field and utility drawings and interpret specifications.
- Experience overseeing work performed by contractors and property owners.
- Knowledge of water and wastewater practices, policies, and procedures.
- Knowledge and training in Health and Safety procedures and regulations.
- Ability to work with numbers with accuracy and attention to detail.
- Excellent technical troubleshooting skills.
- Excellent written and oral communication skills for documenting activities.
- Ability to communicate courteously with customers, the public, other City divisions, municipalities, contractors, consultants, and stakeholders.
- Must possess and maintain valid Province of Ontario requirements to operate mechanized equipment.
- Familiarity with the Occupational Health and Safety Act and its regulations.
- Ability to orient new staff on assigned vehicles/equipment.
- Ability to use or learn various technical devices related to the position.
- Ability to deal courteously with the public.
- Ability to communicate in relation to job duties.
- Must be able to work shifts, weekends, and standby in accordance with the Collective Agreement.
- Ability to work overtime and call-ins as required.
- Physically capable of performing required duties and able to work in all weather conditions.
