About the Role
Under the direction of the Manager, Audit & Inspection, this role conducts timely, regular, and special inspections of business operations registered under the Trust in Real Estate Services Act, 2002 (TRESA) or its successor.
Responsibilities
- Carry out examination and inspection activities of business operations registered under TRESA.
- Investigate formal complaints by examining records to perform reconciliation of the broker’s trust account and establish trust liability.
- Check general bank account and other related or corporate accounts and records to determine financial difficulties or misuse of trust funds.
- Provide administrative functions resulting from inspections or investigations, including preparing correspondence, detailed reports, and recommendations.
- Give evidence at tribunal hearings or in court.
- Provide interpretation and assistance to registrants and other individuals on compliance policies and procedures.
- Identify and report on ongoing inspection problems.
- Provide assistance to investigators.
- Maintain up-to-date awareness of legislation, inspection methods, and deceptive practices.
Requirements
- Thorough knowledge of bookkeeping and accounting principles as they relate to a real estate brokerage business.
- Auditing and related experience.
- Ability to follow accounting processes and reconcile trust and general accounting records.
- Ability to manage and organize large amounts of detailed information.
- Demonstrated ability to work independently and schedule time and resources effectively.
- Strong verbal and written skills.
- Ability to summarize and present evidence and conduct interviews.
- Knowledge and understanding of the judicial process, TRESA, including the Code of Ethics, and the registrar’s requirements.
- Knowledge and awareness of real estate industry practices and changes (including negative and/or deceptive practices).
- Ability to travel and work throughout the Province of Ontario.
