About the Role

We are establishing a public affairs function and seek an individual to build and lead it. This role is crucial for managing relationships with government and statutory bodies during our expansion from a London-based charity to a national organization. The primary goal is to convert political engagement into income, aiming for statutory sources to constitute 25-30% of our revenue by 2030. This involves proactively creating compelling propositions, securing funding through grants, contracts, and tenders, and managing long-term funder relationships. The role offers a unique platform with strong existing links to senior government figures and operates within the fundraising team, collaborating closely with other fundraising specialists.

Responsibilities

  • Build and maintain relationships across the statutory ecosystem, including government departments, ministers, Parliament, civil service, local authorities, and regulatory bodies.
  • Engage across the political spectrum on a cross-party, apolitical basis.
  • Network on the charity's behalf, representing it to senior political and official audiences.
  • Track policy landscapes in youth, sport, community, education, and social mobility, identifying opportunities and risks.
  • Represent the charity at political events and create opportunities for leadership engagement.
  • Own the pipeline of government and statutory funding from horizon-scanning to award.
  • Create proactive, fundable propositions for ministers, officials, and commissioners.
  • Lead the writing of bids and tenders to a high standard.
  • Develop and contribute to consortia and partnership bids.
  • Oversee relationships and grants with quasi-governmental and regulatory funders.
  • Collaborate with program and finance teams to ensure bid deliverability.
  • Manage statutory funder relationships post-award, including reporting and stewardship.
  • Work with the marketing and communications team to build the charity's political profile.
  • Build a systematized sales funnel across statutory and institutional income with fundraising operations colleagues.
  • Translate impact evidence into a compelling political narrative.
  • Lead the public affairs function, shaping its strategy and building a team.

Requirements

  • Significant experience (minimum five years) in the political world, including government, Parliament, political parties, public affairs, or policy.
  • A strong, active network across the statutory ecosystem and proven ability to build new senior-level relationships.
  • A track record of securing statutory, political, or institutional income through grants, commissioned contracts, or competitive tenders, or writing high-quality bids.
  • A commercial, target-driven mindset with the drive to bring in significant income.
  • Excellent written communication skills, with the ability to turn evidence into a persuasive narrative.
  • Sound political judgment and discretion, with the maturity to represent the organization credibly at senior levels.
  • Ability to work on a strictly cross-party, apolitical basis.
  • A proactive, ownership mindset with initiative and follow-through.
  • Ability to stay sharp and effective across multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.
  • Strong alignment with BFF's values and a belief in football for social impact.
  • Eligibility to live and work in the UK.
