About the Role
The Workplace Safety and Insurance Appeals Tribunal (WSIAT) is seeking a motivated professional for the role of Appeal Services Officer. This position involves working with a team to process and close case appeals.
Responsibilities
- Conduct an initial review of case documentation, including appeal forms and releases.
- Prepare appeals for further review and processing by confirming appropriate releases and addressing deficiencies.
- Request information and files from the WSIB and prepare case documents.
- Process, monitor, and update case files by entering data into a case management system.
- Communicate with parties via telephone and assist self-represented workers with the appeal process.
- Compose and send correspondence, review incoming correspondence, and request missing information.
- Identify privacy or reporting breaches.
- Process dormant/inactive appeals by examining case history and determining necessary actions.
- Assess problems or issues with cases to make them 'hearing ready' or close them.
- Maintain a pool of 'hearing ready' case files by reviewing correspondence and WSIB claim files.
- Order missing file portions or better document copies from the WSIB.
- Prepare case records and materials, ensuring appropriate disclosure of new information.
- Communicate with other departments as needed.
- Close appeals that have been abandoned or are outside WSIAT jurisdiction.
- Create and send letters to appellants regarding deadlines.
- Respond to queries from parties.
- Draft Notices of Intent to Close.
- Refer case files to appropriate staff for closing when necessary.
Requirements
- Knowledge and understanding of the Workplace Safety and Insurance Act, 1997, prior and related legislation, or the ability to acquire this knowledge.
- Working knowledge of the Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act and privacy-related issues.
- General knowledge of relevant legal and medical terminology.
- Advanced oral and written communication in English.
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills to explain detailed appeal processes.
- Excellent written communication skills to produce accurate and complete letters and documents.
- Demonstrated discretion, tact, and diplomacy.
- Strong working knowledge of Microsoft Word.
- Proficiency in Adobe Acrobat Pro.
- Knowledge of computerized tracking/database systems.
- Excellent organizational skills to determine priorities and meet deadlines.
- Ability to multitask and manage a large caseload.
- Excellent research and analytical skills.
- Excellent attention to detail.
- Undergo a criminal record and social media search as a precondition of employment.
- Potential for other background checks including education verification and professional credential validation.
