About the Role

NYU Langone Hospital—Suffolk is seeking a Nurse Aide for the Med Surg-2S unit. This full-time night shift position involves performing routine service duties and basic nursing procedures under the supervision of a registered nurse to ensure patient care, comfort, and safety.

Responsibilities

Deliver basic nursing care to meet patient comfort needs.
Respond promptly to patient call lights.
Observe patients and report any changes in condition to the nurse.
Assist patients with activities of daily living, including nourishment, ambulation, personal hygiene, and toileting.
Adapt care delivery to meet individual patient needs.
Perform direct nursing care tasks such as vital signs/weight, baths, skin care, Foley catheter care, enemas, and specimen collection.
Demonstrate proper turning, positioning, and transferring techniques.
Distribute patient nourishment, assist with feeding, and collect trays.
Record food/fluid consumption on flow sheets.
Maintain a clean, safe, and organized patient environment.
Monitor and maintain service rooms in an orderly manner.
Prepare equipment for return to Central Service.
Identify patients prior to care delivery by checking identification armbands.
Recognize and act promptly on safety hazards.
Complete patient rounds to monitor safety.
Utilize proper body mechanics and safety measures during patient or equipment transfers/lifting.
Demonstrate compliance with the Falls Prevention Program.
Accept care assignments willingly and assist other units when required.
Respond to workload fluctuations by assisting other staff members.
Complete errands as requested.
Interact effectively with staff on the unit and in other departments.
Collaborate with management to improve the environment of care.
Seek assistance from Nurse Manager and Nursing Administrative Supervisor for issue resolution.
Participate in the evaluation of nursing practices and support improvement measures.
Attend and participate in educational programs to maintain competence.
Comply with staff meeting attendance requirements.
Participate in the orientation process of new employees.
Assist with the preparation of the room and equipment for diagnostic procedures.

Requirements

High School Diploma or GED.
BLS certification (AHA only) and first aid training.
De-escalation training provided on job.
Ability to read and write at an elementary school level to understand the patient's plan of care and record data.
Ability to perform simple arithmetic calculations at an elementary school level for weight, vital signs, and I & O.
Interpersonal skills necessary to effectively interact with patients and their families, demonstrating recognition of cultural diversity.
Basic analytical skills to gather data, complete comparisons, interpret, and report outcomes.
Ability to manage and perform multiple tasks simultaneously.
Excellent customer service skills.
