About the Role

The Medical Assistant I provides clinical office support to physicians and surgeons, performing patient care and administrative duties essential for quality patient care.

Responsibilities

Perform venipuncture and/or EKGs, check schedules, and organize patient flow.
Accompany patients to exam/procedure rooms and assist with walking, transferring, and dressing.
Collect and process specimens and perform point of care testing.
Prepare patients for examinations.
Assist physicians with various procedures and take vital signs.
Relay instructions to patients and families.
Answer calls and provide pertinent information.
Send and receive patient medical records.
Obtain lab/x-ray reports, hospital notes, and referral information.
Complete and file forms and requisitions.
Manage charts to ensure information is complete and filed appropriately.
Enter orders into the electronic medical record (EMR) system or prepare prescription refill requests for physician review.
Inventory, order, and restock medical supplies.
Set up examination rooms and instruments using proper sterilization techniques.
Maintain logging systems for refrigeration of medications, point of care testing, sterilization, and crash carts.
Check expiration dates on medications and medical supplies and dispose of them appropriately.
Maintain a safe, secure, and healthy work environment by following standards and procedures.
Comply with legal regulations and established personal protective equipment requirements.
Assist in the maintenance of medical charts, including filing reports and test results.
Schedule surgeries/procedures and prepare necessary patient documentation.
Perform proficient phlebotomy duties.
Perform appointment scheduling and registration, and update patient demographic and insurance information.
Maintain, adjust, and confirm patient office schedules.
Check and verify insurance information using internal or web sources.
Perform and verify pre-certification for procedures.
Perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements

High School Diploma/GED with completion of Training Certificate from an approved Medical Assistant certificate course.
Three to nine months of healthcare experience preferred.
Venipuncture and EKG skills required.
Certificate of Medical Assistant training or equivalent.
BCLS certification – Required Issuing Authority: AHA.
