About the Role

The Senior International Student Advisor provides comprehensive immigration advisement, compliance management, and programmatic support to international students and exchange scholars. This role serves as a Designated School Official (DSO) and Alternate Responsible Officer (ARO), managing SEVIS documentation, processing employment authorizations, and ensuring compliance with U.S. federal regulations. Additionally, the role involves system integration, student intervention, and leading orientation and cultural programming.

Responsibilities

  • Serve as a Designated School Official (DSO) and conduct business with U.S. government officials.
  • Serve as an Alternate Responsible Officer (ARO), issue Form DS-2019, and advise exchange students.
  • Issue Form I-20 for various student status changes and needs.
  • Advise international students on non-immigrant status rights and responsibilities (F-1 and J-1) to ensure federal regulatory compliance.
  • Stay updated on SEVP compliance laws and regulations, recommending policy and procedure improvements.
  • Review eligibility for and process Curricular Practical Training (CPT) and Optional Practical Training (OPT).
  • Review and process the 24-month STEM Extension of OPT, including follow-up and compliance advising.
  • Monitor and manage data exchange between the Student Information System (SIS) and Terra Dotta SEVIS Batch Processing System.
  • Assist with implementing and maintaining Terra Dotta updates, including customizing the software.
  • Counsel students considering study interruptions, identify students of concern, and make appropriate referrals.
  • Conduct outreach to students experiencing excessive absences.
  • Assist in planning, implementing, and presenting orientation events, workshops, and cultural programs.
  • Collaborate with the ISO team and campus offices on international student matters.
  • Participate in staff meetings and professional development.
  • Perform other job-related duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Master’s degree required, or a Bachelor’s degree combined with substantial and relevant professional experience in international student advising.
  • U.S. Citizenship or lawful permanent residency required to serve as a DSO and ARO.
  • Five (5) years of directly related work experience serving as a Designated School Official (DSO).
  • Proven track record of managing data in Terra Dotta.

  • Intermediate to advanced knowledge of current U.S. federal regulations and SEVIS functions pertaining to F-1 and J-1 nonimmigrant status.
  • Exceptional intercultural sensitivity and communication skills.
  • Proven ability to build trust and rapport with students from diverse cultural backgrounds.
  • Demonstrated ability to independently design, plan, execute, and evaluate campus programs, student orientation events, and informational workshops.
  • Meticulous record-keeping and high-accuracy data entry skills.
  • Strict attention to regulatory compliance and student records.
  • Outstanding organizational skills.
  • Ability to manage competing priorities.
  • Ability to perform effectively under high-volume pressure.
  • Ability to adapt to shifting departmental needs.
  • Strong collaborative mindset.
  • Ability to work effectively both independently and as a team member.
  • Flexibility to work occasional evening or weekend hours.
  • Second language proficiency (preferred).
  • Prior experience living abroad (preferred).
  • Familiarity with Ellucian Colleague or similar higher education student information systems (preferred).
  • High proficiency with SEVIS and Terra Dotta batch processing software (preferred).
