About the Role

As a member of the professional medical team, the Senior Medical Technologist accurately performs clinical laboratory analyses and examinations to assist in physician diagnosis and treatment. This position requires complex problem-solving skills, independent judgment, and theoretical knowledge to ensure high-quality laboratory services and regulatory compliance. May provide supervisory coverage as needed.

Responsibilities

• Accurately performs testing in a timely manner.
• Interprets and correlates clinical test results with patient history, diagnosis, and clinical condition.
• Communicates stat and critical lab results and instrument malfunctions to appropriate medical personnel.
• Performs QC, routine and advanced maintenance, and troubleshooting activities.
• Accurately prepares reagents and maintains laboratory supply inventory with cost containment in mind.
• Maintains knowledge of computer functions for ordering, performing, and resulting tests.
• Meets all regulatory lab requirements consistently.
• Acts as a key operator and technical consultant for an area or instrumentation.
• Coordinates and assists in the development and validation of new procedures/instrumentation.
• Coordinates and assists in the training of new and existing employees on procedures and instrumentation.
• Participates in staff competency assessments.
• Provides supervisory review of Quality Control results, maintenance records, and other quality assurance activities.
• Assists with inventory management.
• Performs advanced maintenance and troubleshooting activities, including Advanced Preventative Maintenance and QC/Validations for minor equipment.
• Assists in the performance of specialized and complex diagnostic procedures.
• Participates in Regulatory preparation, such as routine Audits/Tracers or responsibility for a section specific checklist.
• Orders and/or coordinates proficiency testing for the department or subspecialty.
• Involves in department Quality Improvement Projects and/or Department QA/QM monitors.
• Participates in Department, Location, or System-wide committees or projects.
• Approves writing or modification of Standard Operating Procedures.
• Provides routine supervisory review of Standard Operating Procedures.
• Coordinates database functions of the Laboratory Information System.
• Participates in the Laboratory Ambassador Program.
• May conduct research and development of new or updated technologies and provide written evaluation.
• Responsible for department scheduling and/or Kronos Timekeeper.
• Teaches in the Medical Laboratory Science Program and Lab rotations.
• Coordinates with the Medical Laboratory Science Program administration to develop curriculum, lecture objectives, student evaluations, and exams.
• Participates in classroom instructions, monitors student activities, attends faculty meetings, and participates in accreditation reviews.
• Performs additional duties as requested by Manager.

Requirements

• Minimum 4 years’ experience as a Clinical Laboratory Technologist, Medical Laboratory Scientist, or Medical Technologist.
• NYS Licensed Clinical Laboratory Technologist.
