About the Role
The Director of Care reports to the General Manager and is responsible for providing direction to the nursing team in regards to the overall day-to-day delivery of healthcare operations, ensuring that the healthcare services comply with the Retirement Homes Act (RHA) and other relevant legislation.
Responsibilities
- Assigns, delegates, and evaluates the activities of the nursing department.
- Plans, assigns, and oversees the Residents’ health and personal care services.
- Participates in inter-professional assessments to identify Residents’ needs and develops an individualized plan of care, ensuring the resident receives the agreed-upon level and quality of care.
- Implements and monitors quality improvement.
- Meets with Residents/Families to resolve problems and concerns.
- Organizes and participates in Resident care conferences on admission and at 6-month intervals or as the Resident's condition changes.
- Maintains accurate and complete health records.
- Reviews pre-medical assessments to ensure the community can provide the necessary care.
- Serves as the Infection Prevention and Control Coordinator for the community.
- Responsible for the recruitment of associates.
- Completes performance appraisals of associates as required.
- Provides ongoing associate education.
- Maintains staffing schedules.
- Promotes the vision, mission, values, and the Resident Bill of Rights.
- Performs any other assigned tasks.
Requirements
- Current registration and in good standing as a Registered Nurse or Registered Practical Nurse with the College of Nurses of Ontario.
- Current CPR & First Aid Certificate.
- Demonstrated experience with medication administration (if medications provided).
- Proficient in the use of Microsoft Office.
- 3 – 5 years of leadership roles in the senior housing industry.
- Knowledge and understanding of the Retirement Homes Act and other applicable legislation.
- Demonstrated understanding of/empathy for the needs of seniors.
- Demonstrated experience in managing a budget.
- Effective communication and leadership skills.
- Familiar with the provisions of the Occupational Health & Safety Act.
- Knowledge of Nursing practices and nursing diagnosis.
- Willingness to update and keep current knowledge of changing regulations, practices, and procedures as required by the College of Nurses.
- Must have a clear vulnerable sector screen, no older than 6 months.
- TB results in less than 6 months.
- Evidence of flu shot.
- Able to provide three work references.
