About the Role

The Advocate Counselor supports New Directions Secondary School, a 9th-12th grade transfer school, by focusing on students struggling academically, behaviorally, and with attendance. This role provides supportive mentoring services, including attendance outreach, home visits, classroom support, crisis intervention, and social-emotional support to help students achieve their academic and social-emotional goals.

Responsibilities

Maintain and manage all related data.
Attend Wediko, NY at The Home and LTW Professional Development opportunities.
Provide milieu support during arrivals, dismissals, transitions, and lunch.
Manage a caseload of students, including attendance and educational progress.
Provide continuous feedback and resources to students and families to ensure academic success.
Conduct individual and group mentoring sessions weekly.
Perform daily student attendance outreach.
Conduct outreach to students and families via phone, written correspondence, and home visits (always in pairs).
Facilitate communication between students, families, and school staff.
Complete required documentation, including Dr. Cloud notes, in a timely manner.
Provide crisis support, conflict mediation, and social-emotional support.
Complete regular assessments and provide resource referrals.
Ensure student exposure to further education opportunities and build college and career readiness skills.
Participate in staff meetings and staff development opportunities.
Collaborate with a transdisciplinary team of Wediko and school staff to create individualized student support plans.
Work occasional evening and weekend hours for college visits and school events.

Requirements

Associate’s degree in social sciences; Bachelor’s degree strongly preferred.
1 or more years' experience providing direct services in a school-based or residential program.
Knowledge of attendance outreach best practices.
Strong communication (verbal and written) and interpersonal skills.
Ability to approach challenges collaboratively, supportively, and creatively.
Commitment to working from a strengths-based perspective.
Commitment to ongoing learning and development, utilizing supervision to improve practice.
Excellent organization and prioritization skills.
Flexible schedule and willingness to work school hours, and occasionally some evenings to support school community events.
Bilingual English and Spanish required.
