About the Role
The Whitney Museum seeks an Assistant to Access Programs and Initiatives to support their mission of building pathways for visitors with disabilities to engage with American art.
Responsibilities
- Assist with the production of select Access content for the Whitney’s mobile guide, collaborating with Interpretation and Educational Content, Digital Content, and Curatorial departments.
- Assist with the production and maintenance of access materials, including Large Print Guides, Assistive Listening Devices (ALDs), induction loops, social narratives, and image descriptions.
- Assist with all aspects of the Whitney’s in-person and virtual Access Programs, such as Whitney Signs, Whitney Descriptions, and Quieter Hours for Neurodivergent Visitors.
- Create work orders and assist with all aspects of Access events.
- Maintain clear communication with Access educators to coordinate monthly programs.
- Respond to messages received through the Access Feedback email and phone line.
- Conduct outreach to diverse disability communities via email marketing, off-site visits, and the production of accessible promotional materials.
- Perform administrative functions for the Access division, including processing invoices, budget tracking, program statistics, report creation, and submitting work orders.
- Develop cultural competency with diverse disabled groups and disability etiquette.
- Collaborate with departments such as Visitor Services, Facilities, Security, Special Events, Marketing, and AV to ensure smooth program execution.
- Purchase and organize art materials, and order snacks for programs/events.
- Document program sessions and public events, organizing files in respective systems.
- Conduct research as needed for the Access team.
Requirements
- B.A./B.F.A. in education, museum studies, disability studies, studio art, art history, or a related field.
- Demonstrated experience in research and writing.
- Strong administrative and communication skills.
- Knowledge of modern and contemporary art history and practice.
- Ability to work collaboratively and be a team player.
- Demonstrated experience working with diverse communities and a commitment to social justice.
- Demonstrated interest in working with diverse disability communities.
- Desire to learn more about contemporary art.
- Knowledge of art making practices.
Skills
- ASL proficiency (a plus)
- Spanish proficiency (a plus)
- Expertise in writing or facilitating image description (a plus)
