About the Role

The Whitney’s Academic Year Internship program offers a semester-long paid internship for rising Juniors and above, including Graduate students, enrolled in an accredited academic program. This is an in-person, onsite internship where participants build and document technology solutions for the museum, gaining a portfolio of real-world work.

Responsibilities

  • Build one or two technology solutions from the Technology Services Idea Management list, scoping them to be finishable within the term.
  • Test built solutions with staff members who have the relevant problem before finalizing.
  • Hand over working solutions, documentation, and walkthroughs at the end of the term.
  • Write four to six staff-facing knowledge base articles for new solutions and existing fixes, following department format and review processes.
  • Use AI tools like Claude for drafting, coding, troubleshooting, and documentation, verifying outputs and reporting inaccuracies.
  • Attend weekly Technology Services team meetings and provide updates on progress and blockers.
  • Keep assigned ideas current in Asana for team visibility.
  • Flag any discovered issues or potential ideas during the internship.

Requirements

  • Currently enrolled undergraduate junior or senior, or graduate student.
  • Majoring in Computer Science, Information Systems, Digital Humanities, Museum Studies with a technology focus, or a related field.
  • Demonstrated ability to build solutions, with coursework, personal projects, hackathons, or open-source contributions counting as evidence.
  • Hands-on experience using an AI assistant (e.g., Claude) to write code or documentation, with examples and the ability to explain the approach.
  • Clear written English and ability to explain technical steps to a non-technical audience.
  • Comfortable finishing small tasks rather than starting large ones.
  • Interest in museums, cultural institutions, or nonprofit technology (desired).
  • Ability to write and debug scripts in PowerShell or Python (desired).
