About the Role
This role involves training other Package Handlers on essential techniques for efficient and safe package movement. You will also be responsible for the physical loading, unloading, and sorting of packages, potentially rotating through various positions within the operation.
Responsibilities
- Train new Package Handlers (PHs) on effective unloading, loading, palletizing, carrying, smalls handling, SWAK, and non-conveyable package handling techniques.
- Provide training to PHs needing additional instruction on package handling techniques as determined by management.
- Offer feedback on proper package handling techniques.
- Reinforce dock safety standards among peer PHs.
- Demonstrate understanding and execution of all necessary processes and procedures.
- Update managers on sort conditions to facilitate operational efficiency decisions.
- Assist in implementing new package handling procedures and techniques.
- Regularly load/unload, palletize, lift, carry, push, and pull packages while training others.
- Utilize hand-to-surface methods for all package handling.
- Load and unload packages onto or from delivery vehicles, trailers, pallets, conveyor system carts, and load gratings.
- Lift, carry, push, and pull packages on a continuous and repetitive basis for shifts of approximately 3-5 hours, with potential for multiple shifts daily.
- Determine the appropriate conveyor system by scanning packages, reading labels and charts, verifying numbers, and memorizing information to sort packages accordingly.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Requirements
- Ability to train multiple peer PHs simultaneously.
- Ability to understand and follow instructions regarding work duties and safety methods.
- Ability to discern numbers and information to sort packages correctly.
- Ability to use basic tools and equipment such as skate wheel rollers, dock carts, hand-held scanners, chutes, and unloading devices.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to work well in a fast-paced team environment.
- PHs operating switching equipment must have a valid driver’s license and maintain a Department of Transportation (DOT) file.
- Must be able to lift and carry between 10 and 50 pounds.
- Must be able to work in hot and cold temperatures.
- Must be able to work in an environment with loud noise.
