About the Role
Gusto is building a PEO (Professional Employer Organization) product to serve as a co-employer for small businesses, handling payroll, benefits, workers' compensation, and HR compliance. As a Staff Engineer on the PEO Growth team, you will own the entire customer journey from discovery to setup, significantly impacting the adoption of this critical product.
Responsibilities
- Own the PEO Onboarding experience end to end, ensuring customers successfully complete the setup process.
- Set technical direction by translating ambiguous product goals into scalable designs and durable abstractions.
- Build high-quality and accurate solutions within a regulated domain.
- Collaborate with other application teams to integrate their services into a cohesive customer journey.
- Utilize AI tools for coding, review, debugging, and exploration, and integrate AI-assisted guidance into the onboarding experience.
- Define, measure, and analyze onboarding success metrics, using experiments to drive improvements.
- Enhance engineering practices in areas such as code reviews, testing, and observability.
Requirements
- 8+ years of professional software engineering experience.
- Significant experience owning customer-facing product surfaces within a large production codebase.
- Strong full-stack development capabilities, with experience in both server-side and modern frontend technologies.
- Demonstrated AI fluency, including practical application and understanding of evolving AI tooling.
- High degree of ownership and ability to drive projects from ambiguous requirements to completion.
- Proven collaboration and influencing skills across team boundaries.
- Ability to level up the technical skills of surrounding engineers.
- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or a related field, or equivalent practical experience.
