About the Role
The Medical Assistant I provides clinical office support to physicians and surgeons, performing patient care and administrative duties essential for quality patient care.
Responsibilities
- Fulfills patient care responsibilities as assigned, including venipuncture, EKGs, checking schedules, organizing patient flow, assisting patients with mobility and dressing, collecting and processing specimens, point-of-care testing, and preparing patients for exams.
- Assists physicians with procedures, takes vital signs, relays instructions to patients and families, and answers calls providing pertinent information.
- Fulfills clerical responsibilities, including managing patient medical records, obtaining lab/x-ray reports and referral information, completing forms, and filing information using EMR or manual methods.
- Enters orders into the EMR system or prepares prescription refill requests for physician review and approval.
- Manages inventory, orders, and restocks medical supplies.
- Prepares examination rooms and instruments following sterilization techniques and infection control policies.
- Maintains logging systems for refrigeration of medications, point-of-care testing, sterilization processes, and crash carts.
- Checks expiration dates on medications and medical supplies, disposing of them appropriately.
- Maintains a safe, secure, and healthy work environment by adhering to standards, procedures, and legal regulations.
- Complies with personal protective equipment requirements for protection against hazardous substances.
- Assists in the maintenance of medical charts, including filing operative reports and test results.
- May schedule surgeries/procedures, verify times with patients, and prepare necessary documentation.
- May perform proficient phlebotomy duties.
- May perform appointment scheduling and registration, and update patient demographic and insurance information.
- May maintain, adjust, and confirm patient office schedules.
- May verify and update insurance information using internal or web sources.
- May perform and verify pre-certification for procedures.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Requirements
- High School Diploma/GED with completion of a Medical Assistant certificate course.
- Three to nine months of healthcare experience preferred.
- Venipuncture and EKG skills required.
- Certificate of Medical Assistant training or equivalent.
- BCLS certification required (Issuing Authority: AHA).
