This role involves setting the research agenda, managing a team of researchers, and directing experimental programs on the RISE testbed. The goal is to produce evidence about AI hardware's operations and ensure computations align with claims, addressing complex scientific challenges in areas like workload classification, network-based evidence, and hardware attestation.

Responsibilities

  • Own Lucid's research agenda, including the selection of verification claims, prioritization, and definition of success criteria.
  • Lead and expand the research team, focusing on hardware security, cryptography, networking, and ML systems.
  • Direct the research program for the RISE testbed, encompassing experiment design, red-team engagements, and publication under an open protocol.
  • Collaborate with policy and partnerships leads to translate policy and customer needs into specific, verifiable claims.
  • Represent Lucid's research externally through publications, presentations, and engagement with research institutions and academia.
  • Establish high standards for research rigor, including the publication of negative results.

Requirements

  • Demonstrated success in leading research within security, systems, hardware, or cryptography, with evidence of published or deployed results.
  • Proven experience in managing researchers or engineers and providing strategic direction to a team.
  • In-depth knowledge in at least one core area: hardware roots of trust and TEEs, applied cryptography and proof systems, network measurement, or ML systems.
  • Sound judgment regarding the feasibility and value of research problems.
  • Comfort with public and adversarial examination of research work.
