About the Role
The Department of Statistical Sciences at the University of Toronto is seeking a full-time tenure stream Assistant Professor in Data Science Computation and adjacent fields, starting July 1, 2027. This role emphasizes advancing the theoretical and methodological foundations of computation in data science.
Responsibilities
- Establish innovative and independent research at the highest international level.
- Establish an outstanding, competitive, and externally funded research program.
- Be assigned a teaching and service load.
Requirements
- PhD degree in Statistics, Computer Science, Data Science, or a closely related discipline by the time of appointment, or shortly thereafter.
- Demonstrated record of excellence in research and teaching in Data Science Computation or adjacent fields.
- Exceptional candidates whose research advances the theoretical and methodological foundations of computation in data science, including sampling and simulation, computational inference, optimization, randomized numerical methods, and scalable algorithms for high-dimensional problems, with particular interest in statistical-computational tradeoffs, complexity, convergence, and theoretical guarantees.
- Experience working with, teaching, or mentoring diverse groups or diverse students is preferred.
- Exceptional candidates whose research and teaching interests complement and strengthen existing departmental research strengths.
- Evidence of research excellence demonstrated through publications in top-ranked journals, research statement, conference presentations, awards, and strong referee endorsements.
- Evidence of excellence in teaching through teaching accomplishments, teaching dossier, and strong letters of reference.
- Commitment to equity, diversity, inclusion, and the promotion of a respectful and collegial learning and working environment, demonstrated through application materials.

Salary/Compensations
- CAD $140,000 to $190,000 per annum, depending on experience. Negotiations beyond this salary range will be considered for exceptionally qualified candidates.
