About the Role
We are seeking a Technical Writer to establish and maintain the documentation infrastructure for our manufacturing and engineering operations during our scaling phase towards mass production. This role involves close collaboration with production, engineering, and quality teams to transform existing knowledge and processes into clear, standardized documentation, including work instructions, test procedures, troubleshooting guides, and engineering release notes. It is a hands-on position requiring direct engagement on the production floor to observe builds and gather process details firsthand.
Responsibilities
- Standardize work instructions across all manufacturing workstations with consistent format, detail, and visual style.
- Maintain a dynamic set of build-step instructions that adapt to evolving workstations, processes, and engineering changes.
- Create, update, and revise procedures for test steps, test programs, rework processes, and build procedures.
- Organize and manage the knowledge base, enhancing its structure for improved information accessibility and currency.
- Review Bill of Materials (BOM) changes and publish engineering release notes, ensuring production teams understand the implications.
- Develop troubleshooting and diagnostic documentation using field diagnostic data to minimize downtime.
- Support engineering documentation standards by formalizing the creation and maintenance of design and process documentation.
Requirements
- Experience writing technical or process documentation in manufacturing, hardware, automotive, aerospace, or similar production environments.
- Comfortable working directly on the production floor, observing builds, interviewing technicians, and translating process knowledge into instructions.
- Strong organizational skills with a focus on structure, version control, and findability.
- Experience with Notion and Linear, or similar knowledge-base tools.
- Ability to collaborate cross-functionally with engineering, quality, and production teams.
- Skill in clear and concise writing to make complex processes understandable.
- Adaptability to ambiguity and experience building processes from scratch.
- Familiarity with BOM structures, engineering change processes (ECOs/ECNs), or PLM tools is preferred.
- Experience building troubleshooting/diagnostic trees or decision-based guides is preferred.
- Background supporting test engineering or test procedure documentation is preferred.
- Experience documenting for a pre-mass-production or scaling manufacturing environment is preferred.
