About the Role

Brooklyn Defender Services (BDS) seeks an Arraignment Paralegal to support clients and staff in criminal arraignment court. This role is crucial for ensuring clients receive timely legal representation and support during their first court appearance after arrest.

Responsibilities

  • Provide support to staff and clients in criminal arraignment court.
  • Obtain paperwork and ensure cases are being interviewed.
  • Track client outcomes and enter cases into the case management system.
  • Interact with family members and clients if they are released.
  • Collect and organize court paperwork and files.
  • Create paper files for new clients as needed.
  • Look up potential conflicts of interest in the case management system.
  • Assist attorneys with information retrieval from the case management system.
  • Provide carfare to clients who are released.
  • Enter data into the case management system.
  • Perform additional responsibilities as assigned.

Requirements

  • Very organized.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced in-court environment.
  • Interest in assisting people who have been arrested and their families during stressful arraignment appearances.
  • Skilled at handling multiple tasks, prioritizing appropriately, and ensuring timely completion.
  • Accurate and detail-oriented.
  • Familiarity with Microsoft Office.
  • Comfortable and confident in learning case management and document management software.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to remain calm under pressure.
