About the Role
The University of Rochester is seeking an individual to assist providers during exams and perform clinical tasks in support of patient care in out-patient clinics. This role involves technical, procedural, and information systems tasks affecting patient comfort, care, and safety.
Responsibilities
- Assists providers during exams, anticipating needs and adapting to patient complexity.
- Attaches patients to diagnostic and medical equipment.
- Provides information, comfort, and care to patients during exams, explaining next steps and status.
- Ensures supplies and equipment are readily available for smooth operations and patient safety.
- Gives patients provider's pre-printed discharge instructions.
- Anticipates and ensures the correct number and type of supplies are available in each exam room.
- Ensures equipment and supplies are available based on individual provider preference.
- Responsible for efficient room utilization and minimizing patient wait time.
- Escorts patients from the waiting area to exam areas.
- Obtains vital signs.
- Performs diagnostic testing and specimen collection per provider order.
- Accurately labels, logs, and processes specimens according to protocol.
- Enters patient data, condition, and care given into the electronic medical record system.
- Performs administrative duties as assigned, including scheduling and registration.
- Maintains adequacy of clinical equipment and medical supply levels.
- Reorders, stocks, and cleans equipment and supplies.
- Conducts inventory of supplies, rotates inventory, and monitors expiration dates.
- Requisitions needed supplies from internal and external vendors.
- Reconciles orders with delivery and tracks utilization for cost trending.
- Makes recommendations to decrease costs in equipment and supply usage.
- Interacts and solves problems with the purchasing department.
- Implements standard infection prevention measures.
- Monitors infection prevention practices for breaches and suggests corrections.
- Precepts new employees to the area with RN oversight.
- May assist providers with patient processes as a surgical procedure assistant.
- Prepares room and instrumentation for procedures.
- Provides basic instruction to patients regarding procedures.
- Anticipates provider needs during procedures and obtains additional instrumentation.
- Accurately prepares specimens for the lab and dresses wounds.
- Checks and calibrates equipment according to protocol.
- Sets up sterile fields as required.
- Preps instrument trays for procedures.
- Sterilizes instruments.
- Prepares specimens in appropriate preservative medium and labels appropriately.
- Ensures accuracy for all requisitions and verifies specimen labeling and logging.
- Reviews discharge instructions with patients.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Requirements
- High School diploma or equivalent and 1 year experience in customer focused/service setting required.
- Associate's degree preferred.
- Equivalent combination of education and experience accepted.
Skills
- Knowledge of medical terminology preferred.
- Knowledge of medical procedures preferred.
- Computer experience preferred.
