About the Role
The Senior Health and Safety Coordinator ensures employees can complete their work safely by setting safety standards based on legal requirements, training employees, monitoring working conditions, and resolving safety issues. This role operates in construction sites and workshop settings.
Responsibilities
- Create and implement safety plans and ensure daily adherence.
- Conduct regular safety observation reports.
- Coordinate HS activities, document status, conduct monthly safety inspections, and complete compliance documentation.
- Attend safety walks and inspections to analyze risks.
- Educate employees on safety standards, expectations, and safe operations.
- Provide recommendations for workplace safety improvements.
- Investigate onsite accidents and identify probable causes.
- Maintain documentation of safety procedures, accidents, and related events.
- Act as a liaison between management and external safety agencies.
- Intervene to correct unsafe work practices.
- Monitor employee and company adherence to safety policies and guidelines.
- Record all safety-related issues and ensure corrective measures are taken.
- Organize routine health and safety training for staff.
- Assist the H&S Manager with periodical audits and document preparation.
- Maintain confidentiality of sensitive documentation.
- Plan the health and safety program and protocols.
- Train supervisors, managers, and leaders on health and safety standards.
- Present safety training sessions.
- Ensure compliance with OSHA, federal, provincial, and local regulations.
- Handle risk assessments to gather information on safety issues.
- Verify consistent employee adherence to safety protocols.
- Analyze health and safety data and recommend changes to regular activities.
- Draft and administer policies, disseminate safety policies to crews and subcontractors.
- Organize accident investigation processes.
- Work closely with Project Managers, Superintendents, and team members to ensure timely closing of safety issues.
- Mentor junior team members.
Requirements
- Possess a bachelor’s degree in health and safety or any science-related field.
- Attention to detail, critical thinking, analytical and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to work well in a team and interact with diverse groups.
- Ability to manage multiple projects and priorities while meeting deadlines.
- Excellent verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills across all organizational levels.
- Ability to prioritize and multitask with many safety responsibilities.
- Advanced Microsoft Office suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) skills.
- Knowledge of safety in the construction industry.
- Knowledge of the process and coordination of local safety records gathering from IHSA (COR, WSIB, WSIR, LTI, etc.) without supervision.
- Knowledge of the process and capability to follow up with the insurance company for workers’ compensation claims until the case is closed.
- Understanding of OSHA guidelines, COR principles, ISO 45001 requirements, and other federal, provincial, and local safety regulations.
- Capability to follow up WSIB with IHSA and collaborate with the project team in case of an incident/accident involving an FCC employee until the case is closed.
- Maintain an accurate database and traceability of incidents/accidents and prepare periodic reports.
- Previous knowledge of organizing and leading the Joint Health & Safety Committee.
- Knowledge and skills to organize and lead safety awareness campaigns, prepare training materials, and deliver safety trainings.
- Understanding of safety KPIs and methods to prepare KPI reports.
- Knowledge of construction safety management.
- In-depth knowledge of general safety guidelines such as Occupational Safety and Health guidelines is a must.
- Registration as a Certified Safety Professional or similar licensure as a safety officer.
