About the Role

The Assistant Nurse Manager supports the Nurse Manager in ensuring excellence and continuity in resident care by directing and organizing nursing care for assigned neighborhoods. This role involves leadership, supervision of nursing staff, and collaboration to maintain appropriate staffing levels and quality resident care. The position also includes participation in hiring, onboarding, and performance evaluations, as well as managing resident and family concerns.

Responsibilities

  • Support the Nurse Manager to ensure standards of professional practice are developed and maintained.
  • Direct and organize nursing care for assigned neighborhoods in collaboration with the Nurse Manager.
  • Provide leadership, direction, and supervision of nursing staff, including RNs/LPNs, CNAs, and Companions.
  • Balance schedules and maintain staffing levels consistent with resident needs.
  • Review and/or modify staff assignments to ensure quality resident care.
  • Participate in the hiring, interviewing, and onboarding process for nursing staff.
  • Conduct periodic evaluations of assigned staff, including annual performance reviews, coaching, counseling, and progressive discipline.
  • Work an on-site schedule of at least 4 days per week, including evening supervisory coverage.
  • Report daily concerns and significant changes in resident condition to night supervisors.
  • Participate in a Nursing Leadership weekend rotation.
  • Demonstrate commitment to the continuum of care for residents.
  • Participate in and promote nursing practice within the Elizabeth Seton Children’s Center.
  • Follow up with collaborating hospitals for resident transfers and escalations in care.
  • Participate in the QAPI process to identify opportunities for system improvements.
  • Establish collegial interdisciplinary relationships to foster communication and growth.
  • Function as an advocate for residents and their families.
  • Escalate and participate in the family grievance process.
  • Attend daily clinical status meetings.
  • Communicate concerns to the interdisciplinary team.
  • Ensure families are updated with clinical concerns and changes reported through the incident reporting process.

  • Contribute to team decisions to fulfill the organization's mission.
  • Treat every resident, family member, and co-worker with dignity, respect, and courtesy.
  • Coordinate with the Nurse Manager to ensure neighborhood coverage during staff absences.
  • Participate in committees as assigned.
  • Collaborate with Materials Management to maintain adequate supplies and restock rooms.
  • Ensure staff conduct themselves professionally and with a customer service mindset.
  • Act as superusers for clinical systems.
  • Enforce regulatory compliance, including infection control policies and procedures.
  • Collaborate with clinical educators to ensure staff attend required educational opportunities and complete mandatory clinical skills competency requirements.
  • Collaborate with preceptors and clinical educators to ensure new hires receive thorough orientation.
  • Support all nursing staff, serve as a clinical resource and mentor, and address complex patient care issues.
  • Participate in Quality Assurance/Performance Improvement (QAPI) activities.
  • Address and resolve patient and family concerns, escalating issues when appropriate.
  • Participate in schedule neighborhood meetings and disseminate information.
  • Participate in the interviewing and selection process for new team members.
  • Supervise and support nursing staff, including performance evaluations, coaching, and counseling.
  • Assume administrative responsibilities as delegated by the Nurse Manager.
  • Help maintain daily neighborhood workflows.
  • Support the development and execution of emergency preparedness plans.

Requirements

  • At least three years clinical nurse experience.
  • A minimum of two (2) year supervisory experience.
  • Must be able to read, write, speak, and understand the English language fluently.
  • Must meet or exceed all health standards and requirements for the position as established by NYDOH and all other regulatory agencies.
  • Must meet the general health requirements set forth by the policies of this Center which includes a medical and physical examination.
  • Must be able to push, pull, move, and/or lift a minimum of thirty-five (35) pounds.
  • Perform tasks that may involve exposure to the resident’s blood/body fluids.
  • Must be able to assist in the evacuation of residents, if necessary.
