About the Role
We are seeking a Design Director to lead our design practice, focusing on raising the ambition, quality, and influence of design within an AI-native agency. This role involves leading the design team, directing key projects, and defining exceptional design standards in the context of evolving AI technologies. The ideal candidate will have a broad understanding of design across brands, products, interfaces, systems, interactions, and experiences, with a curiosity for where the discipline is heading.
Responsibilities
- Raise the bar for design by setting high standards for craft, taste, and originality.
- Partner with the ECD to shape creative direction and lead the design team.
- Engage directly in design work, including sketching, designing, and prototyping.
- Develop designers by providing feedback and fostering their creative point of view.
- Think beyond traditional design categories, moving between UX/UI, digital products, interfaces, storytelling, content, and emerging experiences.
- Design systems, focusing on principles and behaviors rather than just visual surfaces.
- Explore AI as a creative medium, experimenting with new interaction models and workflows.
- Champion work with character, emotion, and cultural relevance, designing for feeling as much as function.
- Partner with engineers, creative technologists, strategists, writers, and producers.
- Lead clients by explaining complex ideas, defending creative decisions, and uncovering new possibilities.
Requirements
- Around 8+ years of experience in design.
- Experience leading significant creative work and mentoring other designers.
- A portfolio demonstrating exceptional design craft and conceptual thinking.
- Experience working across more than one of brand, product, experience, technology, or communication design.
- Experience leading multidisciplinary projects from concept through execution.
- Hands-on experience experimenting with generative AI, prototyping, and emerging creative technology.
- Deep care for typography, composition, interaction, motion, hierarchy, narrative, and detail.
- Ability to identify and articulate the difference between competent and exceptional design.
- Natural inclination to look beyond individual screens toward coherent and extensible frameworks.
- Active experimentation with emerging AI tools and understanding of their significance.
- Generosity with judgment and experience, knowing when to direct, question, or allow self-discovery.
- Comfort with ambiguity in a rapidly evolving field.
