About the Role
The part-time Animal Care Technician will provide specialized care, health monitoring, and technical research support for laboratory mice. This role supports funded research projects and adheres to OLAW guidelines, strengthening future grant proposals and securing research funding.
Responsibilities
- Collaborate with ARF manager for facility issues including animal ordering, receiving, preparing housing, following SOPs, and record-keeping.
- Provide food, water, and basic husbandry care for mice and rats, ensuring freshness and adequate nutrition.
- Monitor animals daily, including weekends and holidays, and record clinical observations and health abnormalities.
- Clean and sanitize cages, change bedding, and perform autoclaving.
- Maintain cage cards, animal histories, and other required records.
- Assist researchers and students with procedures like euthanasia and refining animal handling protocols.
- Practice safety, environmental, and infection control methods.
- Assist veterinarian and IACUC during inspections and investigations.
Requirements
- Minimum high school diploma or equivalent.
- Approximately two years of relevant animal care experience, preferably with laboratory mice.
- Willingness to receive additional training.
- Experience working in an ABSL-2 environment and familiarity with associated training and safety protocols.
- Ability to stand and walk for extended periods, bend, squat, reach overhead, and perform repetitive tasks.
- Ability to lift feed bags and cage racks up to 40 pounds.
- Ability to work comfortably in a warm, humid cage-wash environment.
- Strict adherence to cleanroom contamination controls.
- Must wear specific footwear and extensive Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) including masks, hairnets, gowns, face shields, and double gloves.
Skills
- Knowledge of mouse life cycle and basic biology.
- Knowledge of "barrier facility" concepts, sterilization methods (autoclaving), and micro-isolation cage systems.
- Experience sanitizing rooms and equipment.
- Familiarity with federal regulations governing laboratory animal welfare (OLAW), The Guide for the Care and Use of Laboratory Animals, and Public Health Service (PHS) policy.
- Proficient in recognizing clinical signs of illness unique to mice.
- Skilled in humane restraining and handling mice.
- Skilled in basic animal research procedures.
- Proficiency using specialized vivarium management and documentation.
- Ability to notice signs of pain and distress in mice.
- Attention to detail.
- Mastery of aseptic technique.
- Mastery of strict Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) protocols.
- Excellent interpersonal skills.
- Effective verbal and written communication.
- Ability to work independently.
