About the Role

EDC helps Canadian businesses succeed abroad by providing financial tools and expertise to explore new markets and reduce risks, aiming to build a better Canada and world through trade.

Responsibilities

  • Lead the assessment of EDC's most complex financing and insurance transactions, identifying significant environmental and social risks and recommending key mitigation measures.
  • Apply the Equator Principles, IFC Performance Standards, UN Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights, and other relevant international standards.
  • Analyze Environmental and Social Impact Assessments (ESIAs), Environmental and Social Due Diligence (ESDD) reports, monitoring reports, thematic reports, Environmental and Social Action Plans (ESAPs), audit reports, consultant mandates, Requests for Proposals (RFPs), and environmental and social policies to promote best practices aligned with international standards.
  • Manage relationships with diverse stakeholders, including internal and external clients, consultants, International Financial Institutions (IFIs), Development Finance Institutions (DFIs), and co-financing Export Credit Agencies (ECAs), building professional credibility and mutual trust.
  • Conduct field visits in Canada or abroad (typically 1-6 days, 1-5 times per year) to assess environmental and social performance and capabilities.
  • Negotiate the inclusion and appropriateness of environmental and social commitments in financing and insurance agreements to prevent, mitigate, or manage EDC transaction risks.
  • Provide expert advice to senior management on various environmental and social issues, offering authoritative technical and professional recommendations to improve outcomes for transactions, projects, and change initiatives.
  • Possess in-depth knowledge and understanding of EDC's environmental and social policies and procedures.
  • Monitor transaction and project performance over time to identify and resolve potential non-compliance issues with environmental and social commitments.
  • Guide other Environmental and Social Risk Advisors on complex transactions and cross-functional continuous improvement initiatives related to environmental and social issues within the team, or mentor in environmental and social practices.
  • Identify team development needs and foster professional development, informal learning, and coaching.
  • Recommend changes to environmental and social due diligence processes and practices to enhance EDC's environmental and social risk management for financing and insurance transactions.
  • Provide specialized advice on the interpretation and application of environmental and social policies, procedures, cheat sheets, or products, resolving complex or contentious issues and escalating to other EDC employees for appropriate action.

Requirements

  • University degree in social or environmental sciences (e.g., international development, sociology, anthropology, geography, corporate responsibility, ecology, environmental management, or geosciences).
  • Minimum 7-10 years of experience in ESIA and ESDD consulting or equivalent experience in sectors relevant to EDC (e.g., mining, oil and gas, power generation, infrastructure, or renewable energy).
  • In-depth knowledge of ESIA and due diligence principles, frameworks, and standards, including the Equator Principles and IFC Performance Standards.
  • Proven ability to prioritize and meet deadlines in an environment requiring the management of competing tasks and responsibilities.
  • Ability to discern, simplify, and concisely communicate key issues of complex business transactions, providing advice based on client needs.

Skills

  • Expertise in social or environmental impact assessment, including biodiversity.
  • Experience as an independent consultant on environmental and social issues for lenders or private sector companies working on large projects or with International Financial Institutions (Equator Principles Financial Institutions, ECAs, DFIs, Multilateral Development Banks) or in collaboration with them.
  • Experience working with companies in developing countries (preferably in the Indo-Pacific region and Latin America).
  • Fluency in both official languages.
  • Ability to communicate in other languages relevant to EDC.
  • Degree or training in business administration, finance, or a related discipline.
